F-40 Hydraulic lift questions

When reassembling the lift cover on an F-40 can the position control and draft control mechanism go together only ONE way or can it be assembled incorrectly?
The hydraulics work but when an implement is on it will only lift slightly. Can't see any leaks, no unusual sounds, etc.
Help!

I don't think it's assembled wrong, it probably wouldn't work at all, or go all the way up with no control.

Remove the right inspection cover and VERY CAREFULLY push back on the roller lever and see if it will raise the implement. If it does, the valve lever nut needs adjusting.

If it doesn't raise under load, look up for oil coming from the cylinder seals or the standpipe oring. Also look down where the standpipe goes into the pump. If oil is swirling around under the pump, the relief valve is bypassing.

It does raise but extremely slow. Swirling is on the top of the pump. Sounds like a cover removal and pump re-do.
Thanks for your help

I wasn't real clear about where the oil was moving. It was in the center of the pump right over the oscillating area. That's why I thought I would have to remove the cover to get to the whole pump for re-doing. Am I wrong?

I was at the local Massey dealer working a couple months ago and they rebuilt the lift on a 135. The mechanic adjusted the linkages to the book and when they tested it it wouldn't hardly lift much weight. The old mechanic that works there who is 75 worked on it for a little bit and when he got done it would stand the tractor straight up and hold it there. I asked him what he did because I like to learn stuff like that and he said the linkages was so worn that if you set it to the manual that it wouldn't lift. He said you had to compensate for the worn linkages and that's all he would tell me. I wonder if yours is having the same problem?

First thing I would check is the oring on the
bottom of the standpipe. If it is good, put it
back together and drain down the oil until there
just enough for the pump to pick up. Then you can
see where it is leaking pressure.

The relief valve is under the pump toward the back
best I remember.

Some swirling is normal when the pump is unloaded.
You just don't want to see a major geyser of oil
when under load.

If the motion is jerky, there is a problem in the
pump valves, the pump will need to be repaired or
replaced with a rebuilt pump.

PS: Didn't mean to sound quick with you earlier,
my apologies. I was at work and only had a few
seconds to reply.

If you try to lift with the Draft Control Lever it may do that as it is compressing the Draft Spring at the back of the seat and this is connected to the Control Valve. You should lift with the Position Control Lever and that will prevent that happening as it controls it in a different way. If you have had the Top Cover off did you set-up the control linkage inside or touch the adjustments in any way...if you did, most likely they are wrong now and need to be re-set. Plus you also need to set up the Transport Shut-Off position and the Response setting.. If you wish to have this information, email me and I will send it...but do tell me what you did and why you had the Top Cover off. You may just be operating it incorrectly, it does not operate like the later 135 type systems where you would lift with the Draft Control Lever it is totally different. I will also send you the information of how to operate this hydraulic system correctly. Just give me as much info as you can about what you did and why and then I can try to work out just what you need to do to get it right again...John(UK).. [email protected]

I wasn't saying that the lift operated like the later systems...I was just saying is it possible for the linkage on those to get worn like that 135's did and not work even though it was set to the book.

Jason, I didnt even read your reply, so what I said was not referring to anything you wrote in reply..I will look tomorrow to see how this came about. Unfortuneately this problem can arise when the reply is not aimed directly to you. This has happened many times over the years..it is just how it is read sometimes. Leaving a word out can make a big difference to a reply as well and we have that quite often.JohnUK
