Ferguson tea20 STARTER MOTOR problems etc HELP!!

Hi all.

Got a problem with me 6v tea20, hoping someone can shed
some light on it?
I've recently just fixed my dynamo and (what I thought id also
fixed) the starter motor. But all I can hear when trying to start
her over from the gear lever is a whirring noise, like a spinning.
And that's it. My starter motor won't turn over.
Any ideas?

P.s weird thing this, but when I'm using the fergie (after I've got
her started by hand crank) the dashboard light comes on
randomly when driving along, but then my amp dial will
suddenly stop working and stay at 0...... But then eventually
the dash light will go out.... And my amp dial will start working
again (I.e moving all over the place)

Any ideas?? Really need help please!!!

All the best

Yannis

Well the starter is not engaging might be the bendix drive or starter gear)not sure what to call it, on the starter it self has come loose take it off and have a look at your wires sounds like something is grounding out

Ok I"ll have a look. But enlighten me a bit... How do I do that on a ferguson and where is the bendix, is that just another storm for a solenoid?

Thanks

Your 6 volt TEA20 starter motor looks like this:

Inside the bull nose housing that goes inside the transmission/clutch bell housing is the "starter gear" or "Bendix drive".

When you start the tractor by engaging the gear lever/shifter into the "S" position, the Bendix drives moves backwards towards the starter (or is it forward - I'm not familiar with the 6 volt starter) and engages with the gear (called the "Ring Gear") on the engine fly wheel.

Your tractor will NOT have a starter solenoid unless someone has "fiddled" with it. The bell housing switch (activated when you move the gear lever/shifter into the "S" position) replaces what the solenoid does on most other vehicles.

Your problem may be a tired battery, bad earth/ground, tired starter, faulty or sticky Bendix drive or other possible problems.

If you are not sure where to start, ask and we'll point you in the right direction.

Sounds like an intermittent electrical fault with the active shorting to earth/ground (i.e. Negative ["-"] shorting to earth/ground which should be Positive ["+"] on all TEA20 tractors), or a faulty voltage regulator.

Where is the earth/ground strap from the battery Positive (+) terminal connected to your tractor body? If it is still connected to the back of the dashboard, that may be your entire problem!

Make sure the earth/ground Positive side of the battery is connected to one of the bolts that fasten the starter to the clutch bell housing. You may need to make or buy a new heavy gauge battery lead.

Check the ground lead where it attaches to the back of the Dash Panel, you may find that the bolt to which attaches gets warm. If it is the Ground Lead then get a longer one and attach it to one of the bolts close to the starter. It should be wired Positive to ground. You can also check the battery leads where they attach to the battery and the end of the Battery Lead that is attached to the Starter Switch at the back of the Engine. John(UK)[email protected]

The Bendix (really a brand name) is the small gear inside the starter nose cone.

It spins out and engages the large gear pressed on the flywheel, then retracts once the engine starts.

It takes a battery with sufficient charge to spin the Bendix out into the flywheel gear.

Take some measurements, see if the gear is going far enough in to engage the flywheel gear.

Also, the flywheel gear may have moved back on the flywheel. It's a press fit, should be up flush against the stop in the flywheel. You can see this through the starter hole.

As others have suggested it could be an earthing problem which would account for BOTH problems. The Bendix gear is forced forward to engage with the flywheel ring gear by centrifugal force as the starter motor accelerates to full speed. If you have an earth problem the motor may not be getting enough voltage/current to reach the necessary speed. This would also account for the ignition light coming on randomly.
