Generators.

Hi, this is maybe sort of not the ususal discussion theme for a Ferguson tractor.
I have many times wondered, why did we have to have the alternators, or an AC generator on cars and trucks and tractors. Could never the DC generators, as used on the old Fergusons be made to give a bit more ampere ?
I have understood that because the Power is taken out across the brushes it is not so easy to do that With a lot of Amps. Sort of burn the brushes and commutator.
And, I have never understood, (I probably should know this) why you can not take out the Power on the Field, I mean make the Field With heavier gauge wire and windings enough to give out for example 12 volt, and then use thin wire on the rotor. I understand that the rotor perhaps had to be made different than it is now. But still.
Never understood this.

Can someone here enlighten me please ?

Need a larger case to make more windings and more amperage. You can change the windings and change it from 6V to 12V but the amperage will stay the same.
I have a proof meter drive genny (or 2) around here that will get updated to 12V windings and then replace the replacement 12V alt on her fergy.

Hi Bill, long time no see. I remember asking this myself years ago, the answer I got was rather hollow, so hollow I am too tired to remember what the rational was. Part was due to 'negative ground/earth' becoming the industrial norm, and AC being 'easier' on electric componants? or some such things like that'. I have a generator off a fergie that makes 114 volts... enough to power a North American power point/outlet...IF... it was AC instead of DC... this is what makes the Amish smile when we talk like this...

My TEA20 has always had the standard Ferguson (Lucas) generator which has a maximum output of 11 amps at 12 volts DC. (132 watts)

If the battery is kept fully charged, the engine tuned and all electrical connections clean and tight, the generator has never been a problem.

Until the 1950s most US built cars, including the flat head V8, had only a 6 volt system

Beware running headlights and implement lights, most bulbs are around 50 watts or higher and will drain the battery in a relatively short time.

Hi Tony,

Yeah, long time no see. I am fine, I think. A little disheartened maybe.
California, or this area of it has a very pleasant climate. Even if it is so different from Norway. It is pleasant to walk out in the morning in the socks or without and feel that the concrete is still warm from the day before. Would never happen in Norway.

Wish I had a place to tinker with tractors. And, disheartened because of the lack of American cars and enthusiasm. That is really really sad. I had thought I would come to a country where people were proud of their products. But no such thing anymore. But, it seems to be more important with foreign stuff. Exotic, well, you can"t make a country prosper by buying everything from other countries. I know it my sound selfish, but people has to care for their own countries. USA can not prosper trying to build the economy in China and all other countries in the world, and neither can any other countries either. It works for a little while, then it starts going downhill.

Well Tony, sorry for my rant. I hope you are well and everything goes fine over on the other coast.

American cars were becoming depressing by the late 60's, the with the oil embargo of '73, owning an 8 mile per gallon Buick or mercury was like being punished! By the time Chrysler got things going again in the 80's, it was all built with German and Japanese drive trains! The addiction to petroleum is the whole evil plot in a nutshell... that has to change.
It's not the US made vehicle, labor, technology or designs... mater of fact, I hear US made trucks, heavy equipment and locomotives are still the most popular when sold around the world. And rich Chinese are on a waiting list for new Buicks!!!
