TO30 clutch disengagment?

OK, so I've been working on this TO30 (front main seal, front axle etc) and finally am able to drive it - my question is about the clutch disengaging, or not as the case may be.

If I'm driving and depress the clutch it should stop immediately right? As it is I have to hit the brake pedal (the linked pedal, not the left or right cutting brake) and there's a mechanical "ca-chink" noise and then the clutch fully disengages and the tractor stops.

I'm thinking the plate may be sticking to the flywheel and tapping the brake pedal is enough to break it free - should I spray anything in there or see if it loosens/frees up with use?

Make sure the clutch pedal free play is adjusted properly.

You don't want to spray anything in there. I doubt it's a sticking problem unless the disc is grease soaked, even then they don't usually stick (a stuck clutch is caused from sitting and rusting, once it breaks loose it will work normally).

Like Jerry said, check the freeplay adjustment, should be about 3/4 in between the pedal and the stop. A little less won't hurt as long as it's not riding the throwout bearing.

Have you had the engine out? If so, the disc may have gotten bent or the pilot bearing damaged during reassembly.

The mechanical clunk doesn't sound good. Could be a problem with the pressure plate.

Either way, you can run it and see if it gets better, or worse... Or take it apart and see what's happening.

Engine's not been out that I know of - I picked this up in the Fall with a wasted front seal and a wore out front end. I've not really run it other than to drive it on the trailer, and then into the barn when I got home. I did try adjusting the clutch free play as it didn't really engage until the pedal was ALL the way up.

I was thinking of pulling the starter and trying to blast the assembly with brake cleaner, the weep hole isn't dripping so I don't think the rear seal is as bad as the front one was, but I thought it might have enough residue to cause the disc to stick.

Now that I've mounted the loader frame it figures I may have to split it

The previous owner probably adjusted all the freeplay out trying to fix the release problem.

Brake cleaner probably won't hurt anything, but probably won't help either. If the disc is greased, it's not going to clean it up.

Only time I've ever seen a clutch stick like that was if it had grease on the clutch plates.

It may be rear main seal leaking oil onto the clutch disc, other than a split and clean I would not have any better advise and if you would split it in two you could just replace the disc and clean all parts and would probably find the trouble in there or maybe even something else

From what you have said, quite possibly the best thing to do is to take out the Engine and check the Clutch properly. There is nothing that you can do to it from outside. You should be able to see what is happening with the Engine out. John(UK).... [email protected]
