I am trying to find out what type of oil is used for
the transmission and hydraulic oil for my TO20. I
have read several different things. The oil in mine
is milky and I want to drain it assp. Thanks fir the
help.

When your tractor left the factory it had GL-1 90 weight oil in the hydraulics, transmission and differential. Over the years there has been much improvement in oils and many are using the same oil that you would use in the engine. This way if you live in a cold area your hydraulics will not need as much warming up as did the GL-1 oil in order to use the hydraulics to push snow. You may save some money by buying larger quantities of one type of oil and only having to stock one type.

I just replaced the hydraulic transmission oil in my TO 35.

I ordered the gl-1, 90 weight mineral oil from NAPA at about $13 per gallon.

As others have said, in the cold months the lift is slow at first. Some use std motor oil 10w30, they say, the lift will work faster in the cold weather.

It may be "an old wife's tale" but Ferguson used the mineral oil in order to protect or properly lube the brass bushings in the transmission.

Who knows for sure, lubes are much better today than they were 40-50 years ago.

Use Multi-grade 10W/30, this is much better all year around and definitely better in cold climates. The old GL1 Oil they used is not as good as it does not have the supplements for anti-wear that 10W/30 has. I know there are lots out there say use the old GL1 oil because that is what was used originally, but they didn't have the Multi-grade oil then. The GL1 oil that is available now is not the same "recipe" that it used to be anyway, it is more like the Multi-grade oil now but without the Multi-grade qualities. The GL1 oil does not make allowances for different temperatures like the Multi-grade oil does. With Multi-grade 10W/30 the hydraulics are much faster and they control better as the Control Valve is not being damped by the thicker oil and it is definitely better for preventing wear on the transmission. But you need to stop water getting into your system if you are changing the oil or it will go milky again. You should fit a rubber Boot to the bottom of the Gear Change Lever,(available from this site) this is the main source of water leaks and the Draft Spring at the Back of the seat is the other place but this most likely seized and requires more work to change the seal. If you need the information how to carry out this work, email me at fergusontractors at hotmail.com and I will send it to you and anything else that you may need.
