On the concept of packing/priming the oil pump with Vaseline, please give me some detail. Do I simply fill the gear area and put the plate back on? Or do I fill the pick up tube and internals? Or?? Any abc"s/ 123"s instructions on how to do this? Thanks! (Z134)

You can pack the gears and it will prime when started. I use assembly grease. I take assembly grease tube and fill where the pickup tube(screen tube)screws on. Also if you don't do this you can take oil gauge line off at block, use a pump oil can and fill pump from top. Do this when engine is together. I do this if I forget to prime pump when rebuilding engine. Just pump about a cup of oil thru line and replace line and your good to go. Most the time it will prime without oil just by turning engine over, but I like to always prime pump. Then you know for sure.

i no my X father in law used to do that, just take the cover off pack it full the put it back on. no need to do the tube at all just the pump itself

I did mine and used the pump to fill the tube.
Overkill.
However, I also did replace the rubber seals
('50 TO-20) at the ends of the tubes. You can find those rubber seals at a hydro repair shop.
I figured that overkill was going to work better than coming up short. Vaseline dissipates quite quickly.
Machine curently at about 80 hours and 35 PSI pressure at any speed/temperature.

Hey Ron another way to look at it is or why some folks do that is. If you have ever used a discharge pump like draining a pond or some other water hole. when you put the suction side of the pipe in the pond you have to prime the pump to get the water to start sucking up. same difference with a oil pump the Vaseline acts as the prime for the pump. Personally i dont do this only because i make sure when i build a motor its well lubed when i put it together. when i do build one i start the build and crank it right after i dont let it sit. Now if i was going to build one then let it sit for a long period of time i would pack the oil pump. Hope it helped

for all the great information. Hopefully I will get the pump and all the main bearings in, over the weekend. I am sure I will need more help later, lol. Thanks again........
