I had my tractor running, turned it off to go to the house.Came back out, tried the starter button and nothing.Just a whirring sound, starter is not engaging. This appears to be original Delco-Remy 12 volt, starter,(paint is original)I have a voltmeter, wasn't sure where to start.(lol)

give the starter a vigorous rap with a wooden mallet or rubber hammer. sometimes that will get you going.
don't be over vigorous though.

I have trouble with the battery cables getting corroded and the contact between the battery posts and cables. If the battery is over 4-5 years old, it probably is time for a new one.

There's at least 2 models with different sets of guts inside and one has a pin which will sheer and not allow the gear to engage, just tear it down. After removing the 2 long bolts just pull the nose piece to see if the roll pin is sheered. If you pull the other end the brushes will have to be spread to go back on the armature.

Remove the Starter and wash the Pinion and the Bendix in some gas, it may be sticking due to dust from the Clutch.DO NOT OIL You can also check the Brushes for wear or sticking. Make sure that the Ground Lead has a good connection. If necessary fit a longer ground lead from the battery to one of the bolts close to the Starter..JohnUK...fergusontractors at hotmail.com
