TO-20 Throttle Rod, Governor, etc. - Where to Begin?

I'm getting the TO-20 back together, and hope to start it in a week or two.

I have detailed instructions on setting the governor from John (UK) (Thanks, John!) and the FENA website. I also have the Shop Manual and Parts Book, so I know where everything goes.

My problem is the rough settings on the throttle rod, u-bolt, governor compensator spring, etc.

Is there a step-by-step list of what to set and tighten, and in what order, so that things are close to where they should be? (For example, "set the hand throttle control at 2 o'clock on the dash", then "tighten the u-bolt ...", etc.)

If there is a list, I didn't see it in the Shop Manual. I see the checklist about making sure things aren't binding, etc., but I'm not even that far along yet.

Too many moving parts!

As always, thanks.

Hi, I believe that I you have everything together correctly and
the throttle fully connected you are on the right track. With the
throttle lever in the closed position you should be at the idle
position on the carb.

Now you can push the clamp on the throttle rod far enough
towards the dash to make the friction disc work, a vise grip will
help hold it in place so you can tighten the clamp. Make sure
the throttle moves smoothly, sometimes a bend in the
governor to carb rod will bind the works.

(quoted from post at 16:24:56 06/04/14) Where can I buy the throttle lever friction disc.

Any Agco dealer can get them. My local one stocks them. They are the same disc as the hydraulic control lever friction disc. You could probably go to a CNH dealer and get a control lever friction disc also

You can also make one, Ford8NPower. (Or, more accurately, a very nice member on the YT Board can make one and send it to you - thanks!)

I don't have my Parts Book nearby, but the dimensions for the disk are right in there: overall diameter, hole diameter and thickness of the cork material.

The measurements for the cork disc is 2 1/2" and 1/8" thick with a 7/16" hole. I have this one made up, if you would want it email me at [email protected] with your address and I will get it in the mail to you.
Thanks
Del

If you follow the info that I sent to you, the Governor will set-up. There is no other way to do it. You should do it in the strict order in which it is written and don't go to the next part until you have the first part set correctly.
Obviously there will be some final settings to do like the Maximum speed and idle speed. The Bumper screw is left screwed out until the Governor is working properly. The only time you adjust the Bumper screw is if the Engine "Hunts" on full throttle. It maybe is that your engine will not hunt and in that case you leave the Bumper screw alone, Incorrect adjustment of the Bumper screw will cause sluggish response from the Governor. Ask me if you need more help..JohnUK... fergusontractors at hotmail.com

Thanks, John.

I was having trouble with the re-assembly itself, not the settings, but I took another look at the diagram, and I'm on the right track - closer than I thought.

(What's this "new user" business?)
