the three point on one of my to-35's (no live pto) drops as soon as I push the clutch in. what do I need to look for as a possible solution ??
thanks.

Take off the inspection cover on the right side. DO NOT REACH IN THE OPENING WHEN THE TRACTOR IS RUNNING. Put a decent weight on the 3pt and lift it up part way. Peak in the inspection hole (use a mirror if needed - but keep your hands out) and look for any oil coming from up top. Front right corner is where the standpipe is. O-Ring could be shot where it goes in the top cover. Cylinder is mounted to the top cover. Look at it and see if there is oil pouring out anywhere. A little leakage along the rod is ok, gushing isn't. Check for lots of frothing from right below the inspection hole - this is where the relief valve is, and it could be stuck open.

As far as I am concerned it is not normal for a single stage clutch unit to drop their implement very fast. I remember I would get called in from the field for dinner and I would not put the implement down and when I returned it was still in the up position. That was when I was young and did not know better. After John (UK) explained why it made a lot of sense and also included safety.

Correct. Shouldn't drop like a rock. It will drift down slowly since there isn't an actual seal or check valve, but it shouldn't hit the ground every time you push in the clutch. If it does, that's a sign that your burning a lot of power pumping oil to make up for a leak. (mine used to be that way before I rebuilt the cylinder).

I read years ago that the rule of thumb is that the three pt. should hold up a two btm. plow for about 20 min. after the engine is shut off before drifting down.

Cylinder or standpipe O rings. Try O rings first, easy. If that doesn't fix it, have to remove top cover and rebuild the cylinder. Top cover is heavy.

These hydraulics often have leaking valves in the Side Chambers of the Pump and also through the Control Valve because the sp0acer washers wear and the pressure escapes. If you look inside when you have a load on the 3 point you will see if there are any leaks. If the Valves are leaking in the Pump then you should o/h it anyway.
If you have to take off the Lift Cover then you should also re-set the Controls inside. If you need more info about how to do any of this, email me direct.. JohnUK fergusontractors AT hotmail.com
