TO-20 front wheel spindles

So I pulled the front wheels of my tractor yesterday to check the spindle play. There is some play but not to much. I got out my manual to see how the rebuild is done. sounds like a real job to me. do I really have to pull the front axel apart and have the bushings pressed out or is there a simpler way? With the small amount of play I am tempted to let them go for now any thoughts?

If it drives OK you may not want to repair. Just keep it greased. Most of the times people don't grease it. It's not hard to replace bushing's. You can drive bushings out with axle on tractor. It's just easier on work bench.

Each person defines "small amount of play" differently. Perhaps just grease them and go. But, if the spindles are real sloppy the bushings can be replaced fairly easily. You'll get better advice from someone else than me about doing the job "right". But I did both of my spindles with just basic tools sitting around my limited shop. Are they perfect? No. Vastly better? Yes. I left the axles on the tractor. Just used a piece of scrap steel and a big hammer to drive them out the bottom, and a chisel to break them up and pull them out the top. My thrust bearing were shot (as in nothing left by some pieces) so I replaced them at the same time.

So, if yours are real bad I'm pretty sure you can make them a lot better. If they are pretty decent, getting them to perfect might be harder. Someone else can help you there.

As an aside perhaps to be corrected by those more knowledgeable, if your spindles are well worn removing all play may require rebuilding the spindles themselves as the bushings must permit other parts of the shaft to pass through upon installation. That may mean the bushing cannot be sized properly for the worn area of the spindle. In my case, I think this is why I cannot get to them to perfect, just "much better".
