First time this ever happened and tried the old screwdriver in thru the fill hole but couldn't get it outa reverse. Its my 57 to35.

my suggestion, release the clutch, thru the oil cap long screwdriver do not try to turn the gears try to slide them from front to back or back to front which ever works.

I have a 1957 TO35, it has crossed gears a number of times on me over the years. The shifter rails are worn.

As others have said, try to get the hi-lo shifter into neutral, if possible. With clutch pushed in or tied in the down position, whatever you have to do.

Open oil fill cap, use a large screwdriver and try to move the shifter, most times the shifter will slip back into the proper position.

Whatever you do, do not place so much pressure on shifter that you break a part off. If you can not get it to slip back into position, you will have to call a mechanic.

Advice that has worked for me: once you have the shifter back into the proper position.

You must, must, must retrain yourself how to shift the tractor. When shifting always keep a slight downward pressure on the shifter lever. Most time mine locked when I was backing up, then started to shift to a forward gear. When I applied the brakes in reverse my body would go slightly backwards with my hand on the gear shift, I would pull up on the shifter lever as I shifted the transmission, that is when it crossed gears.

Shift slow with downward pressure on the shifter lever. This procedure has worked for many years for me, cannot remember the last time it locked.

When was the last transmission/hydraulic/differential oil change?

Well I brought it home and parked on a hill so I could roll forward an off the trailer.Thought I'd try a smaller screwdriver as the one before was large also tried the granny in neutral. If that don't work????? I'll pull the cover.

I don't think the hi/lo will go into neutral with the rev stuck in the way. Not a screw driver but a small crow bar, prybar? with a bit of a curve to it. rock it back and forth till something gives. If you got to put more than 20 minutes into this process, might as well just take up the bolts- don't strip the whole dash and steering thing, but get the bolts off and up an inch to look in there. Gosh be careful of the day-tant balls and spring if you do this.... and the gasket.....agh... get a bigger crow bar...

Thanks diesel tech, took a look at the manual and 1st/reverse is 2nd one over from filler cap, took my daddys old long thin screwdriver and pryed forward and wala popped right out. Got a scare though when it wouldn't move-- forgot the high low was in neutral.Maxwell, we are the mechanics.

Glad you got it working again without too much trouble.

remember my tip:
Shift slow with downward pressure on the shifter lever. This procedure has worked for many years for me, cannot remember the last time it locked.
