Clutch Adjustment

I recently replace the pto shaft in my TO20. Since, I never really had a reason to use the tractor I don't recall moving it, but I'm certain that I checked to make sure the tractor could be placed in gear. I know the PTO worked fine. Well yesterday, I tried to drive the tractor, but It would not go into forward gear and occassionly in reverse. When trying to place the tractor in gear, I could grind the gears. I could also place the PTO in gear while the tractor was running. When tractor is off I could put the tractor in Forward and reverse with ease. At time I did not consider the clutch but someone suggested that I adjust the clutch/ How is this done?

The first thing to do is check the clutch pedal With pedal all the way up it should hit the foot peg now push it down until you feel it engage the clutch there will be a gap of 3/8" that's from peg to pedal if it needs adjusting loosen bolt on pedal put a screwdriver in clutch shaft until you get it were it needs to be. there maybe oil on the clutch making it difficult as well

I may have made a honest mistake on the clutch shaft i don't think you have a hole for the screwdriver it should be a 11/16 wrench to adjust the clutch

It could be the clutch has become rusted to the fly wheel! If it has been sitting for a long time! If this is case we can tell you how to get it unstuck!!! Just ask!!!

Thanks everyone, its been raining cats and dogs so I have not had the time work on the tractor, but I'll keep you posted.

Hold the shaft while adjusting the pedal...

Ok, today I adjusted the clutch without any real luck. I definitely tighten the clutch more but I really can't say it helped and I don't believe I can make it any tighter. Before today, when the tractor is not running, I can place it in any gear, but when the tractor was running I could only place it in reverse and turn on the PTO. When it went in reverse, the clutch never felt like it help engage. Also, when it went in reverse I was glad I had it scotched because the clutch would disengage it from reverse. Today after tightening the clutch, I had the same problems, but for one brief moment I was able to place in reverse - back out to driveway, then drive in first then second and when I went to third gear, I lost forward motion. After I got towed back the garage, I could put the tractor in forward and reverse but it would not move, the PTO was even sluggish at times. Again the gears were grinding a lot.
So, does this sound like a stuck flywheel? Or did I somehow not replace the PTO shaft correctly? The old one slide right out and the new one slide right in.

I went back and made some microadjustments to the clutch yesterday. Not that I'm sure things are any better, but now when I engage the pto, it easier to engage in forward and reverse with some grinding of the gears. When the tractor is in reverse then the pto stops running. If the pto is not engaged I cannot engage the gears at all. I drove the tractor in all 4 forward gears, again the PTO had to be running. Also, when I pressed the clutch while the pto was running it would not turn off the pto. What is going on, I need your help?
