transmission housing drain cotter key

Just thinking outside the box here!!!!!

The up side down cotter key located in the drain
hole of my TO35 Ferguson has finally bit the dust.

I can not get another one in there that will have
the legs spread hanging down, so as to turn and keep
the hole open.

What if I drilled that hole out a bit, then inserted
my up side down cotter key into a brass plug or
insert, then drove the open plug up into the hole.

This way the drain is open, the cotter key is
properly orientated with the legs hanging down so it
turns in the grass and keeps the drain hole open.

School me on this idea, will it work?????

That would work, but sounds like a lot of trouble to me. Not even a concern unless you have a leaky rear main seal or a input shaft seal leak. If you do,it's needs to be split amd repaired anyway and replace the cotter key. If not why not just clean the hole out occasionally with a 20 penny nail?

I think you can remove inspection plate in front of housing and reach it. If clutch and pressure plate is to close for your arm to reach it you might take a magnet to drop cotter key in hole. Worth a try.

Use a piece of wire shaped like a cotter pin and squeeze the "legs" together to get them through the hole. Or just check the hole and clean periodically.

I do have a leaky input shaft, I keep the oil level in the sump at the mid level, very little leakage at that level. Many years ago I got the drain hole plugged when I got stuck, did not check the drain hole, it was plugged,

Got oil on clutch, it had to be replaced, just trying to keep that from happening again, if at all possible.

Thanks for your input,

My current procedure is to check the drain hole each time I fill the fuel tank. But sometimes I forget!!!!!!!
