Continental z134 smoking

Hello, I have a TO30 that was running great. The engine started backfiring and then died. The points were cooked. I replaced the points the condenser and the plugs. Got it running again but it is blowing white smoke out the exhaust and the pipe on the valve cover. There is also oil coming out of the governor. Once and a while there is a knock in the engine as well. I can not throttle up either. Does this sound like the intake valves? I just replaced the radiator because the old one blew. I assume this may have overheated the engine causing my problems. Any ideas what to look for first?

Sounds like time for a engine rebuild. Blow by out of pipe is bad rings. Did it smoke before engine backfire? Also take oil filler cap off with engine running and see if it smokes out of tube. You can check compression and this will tell condition. Needs to have 150 Lbs.

Sounds like a blown head gasket. The white smoke is probably water vapor, the occasional knock may be coolant getting into a cylinder, not good!

Depending on how hot it got, there could be other damage. If the engine was healthy before, as in not smoking, had good oil pressure and not fouling plugs, pull the head and look at the cylinder walls and tops of the pistons. The cylinder walls should be smooth with no galling. The tops of the pistons should show no signs of melting or burned areas around the perimeter of the top edge.

Caution: With the head off, you'll need to put some short bolts and flat washers in to hold the cylinder liners down BEFORE turning the engine. If one rides up, it will break the oring seal at the bottom of the liner, then you'll be going into the bottom end to replace the orings!

If all looks well, you can probably get by with a valve job, head surfacing, and new gasket. If other problems are found, it will be time for an overhaul.

This needs to be done ASAP, there is coolant inside the engine, it will soon turn to rust and corrosion!

A shop manual would be a very good investment.

Compression check is usually good to see any cylinders are more than 20 pounds different from each other. Pull the plugs. A green electrode will probably be the bad cylinder. Got a radiator pressure checker? Pull the plugs and pump it up to about 7 PSI. Bad cylinder will leak fluid. Just remember to crank it over before reinstalling the plugs.

Thanks guys. It was not smoking before the radiator went. All cylinders are about 145 but all of the plugs were wet when I took them out. It does smoke out of the oil fill cap. It looks like the I am going to have to rebuild it. The oil pressure still goes up fine when It runs so it seems like the pump is still working. It sounds like from what you guys have described that the head gasket is toast. I will see what it looks like when I take the valve cover off. Just when you need the tractor the most is takes a vacation. Thanks again for the tips. I will see what I find this week.

volksman, you say you have a TO 30 and you say you have a Z 134 engine in it. If this is correct did the Z 134 engine bolt into it without any modification or a little or a lot? Just curious? Thank You.

I bought the tractor this way. I need to double check but I am pretty sure the engine is cast with the z134. I will let you know.

i would take a look at the top end first and repair and then if you are willing to spend the extra money just go ahead and rebuild the whole engine and maybe upgrade a few things like pistons and sleeves good luck but up may get a away with just a top end rebuild if the oil pressure is still good

When you get the head off, look at the gasket closely. If it blew into the crankcase area, the side the pushrods come up, that could explain the blowing out the breather tube and oil cap.

I have a Z129 no idea why the 134 was stuck in my head. Anyways it looks like a rebuild on the engine and the governor are on the plate. Thank you for the tips and wish me luck. I have done a lot of engine work but not on one that is so open and not in a car. This should be a little easier on the back.
