electrical question

my new to me TO-35 came with electrical issues. the previous owner had a 12v batt in it and some things sorta hooked up. he gave me a new glow plug which i installed, it was connected to a switch on the dash installed upside down. the system didn't charge and his logic was to put a batt charger on it or pull it to start. "after all, once it's started, ya don't need electricity" anyway, i pulled the genny and put an alternator on it. i yanked the old wire harness and im gonna make a new one. my question is what kind do i need and where do i find a timer for the glow plug ?

also, is this where the wires are supposed to hook up to the neutral/shift/safety switch ?

Best solution for the glow plugs is a heavy momentary on push button switch, only on when you hold it in, 15-20 count and you are good to go. Did this on an old F350 truck works great :)

The alternator wiring harness is simple to make.

You'll need a 10ga wire from the big red terminal
on back of the alt to the battery, easiest place
to attach will be the battery terminal on top of
the starter.

You'll need to find a plug to fit the 2 small
terminals on the alternator. The auto supply
should have one, or scavenge one from a salvage
yard or repair shop.

Connect the #1 terminal in series to an indicator
light (incandescent, not LED) to the ign side of
the ignition switch. (Assuming it has an ignition
switch. If not, add a toggle switch between the
indicator and the battery.)

The #2 terminal will jump to the battery terminal.
The wire from the #1 and #2 terminals can be 14ga
or 16ga.

For the glow plug circuit, instead of a timer, try
a spring return toggle switch wired to a Ford
starter solenoid. Just wire it from the battery to
the solenoid switch, then from the battery to the
solenoid, then to the glow plugs. You need a
solenoid switch because the glow plugs draw a lot
of current. Need 10ga wire from the battery and to
the glow plugs.

At the auto supply, you can get split plastic
harness tubing, makes for a neater , professional
job. I like to solder and heat shrink all
connections. Try to find water resistant switches,
remember this will be outside.

Just pulled out my 1960 Ford 801 Diesel book.
1/2 throttle and hold button for glow plugs 30 to 90
seconds. Release button and start engine.
OR
For temps below 15 degrees F spray ether starting
fluid while cranking. If you have used the glow
plugs, wait 15 minutes before spraying ether.

Forgot about the neutral switch... Yes, that is it in the picture. Might want to check it with an ohm meter. Or just go ahead and replace it, looks pretty old.

ok, thanks, yes, i also planned on soldering and shrink wrapping the terminals. i did a little research and found what they call a glow plug controller , so im gonna check into that next time we go into town. as far as relays go, i think a starter solenoid is a great idea. thanks again :)
