to20 air cleaner question

my to20 has the small jar attached to the air cleaner system. when i was mowing last week somehow the jar got broken. after a while the tractor would not run unless it was fully choked. can someone tell me what all i should do other than replacing the jar. Like should I clean out the air filter, clean the carb, etc ? i am not sure exactly how long the tractor ran after the jar was broken.

I think you may be referring to the small jar that is the fuel filter system. The air cleaner is quite large and has a metal can on the bottom that is serviced with oil. If you look at the fuel filter parts on this site you can get a new jar with gasket and replace what broke.

Post a picture so we can be sure what is the matter.

Never seen a glass jar on the air cleaner. Unless someone has added or changed something?

If you're talking about the sediment bowl on the bottom of the fuel tank, if it were completly broken and gone gas would have been pouring out on the ground and it would only run until the carb was empty. If it were cracked and leaking, it would run until the fuel tank was empty.

If that's the case, then nothing will need cleaning, just replace the bowl, be sure the gasket and screen are in place, refuel, and check for leaks.

Can you send a picture?

No not the fuel bowl. I think it is referred to as a dust jar. It is on the same side as the carb and is a 1/2 pint mason jar. Sorry I don't have a pic as the tractor sits at the farm a couple hours away. I can find the jar for sale at various tractor part stores.

jars were used on air cleaners as a catcher of heavy dirt before it gets to the oil bath. find a mason jar, I believe a pint small mouth, and put it on.

OK, sounds like an aftermarket filter.

Evidently after the jar broke, it let something get in the carb bowl and clog the main jet. You'll need to remove the carb and try to ease the bowl off without tearing the gasket. Then clean it up with some spray carb cleaner. There will be some mixture adjusting screws, before moving them, turn them in and count the turns to stop. Then when you put them back, you'll have a good starting reference. You'll probably be doing this in the field, so take something to work over just in case something gets dropped.

Bill, you may also want to check the mesh filter media in the main body of the air cleaner, and the oil cup.

That cyclone/glass jar is a pre-cleaner, ahead of the normal factory oil bath/mesh air cleaner.

If the glass jar broke, and you sucked something into the carb, you may be missing something in the factory air filter.

(My TO-20 had the aftermarket cyclone/jar pre-cleaner when I bought it, and I went back to factory.)
