Another Barn Fresh TO 35 - Cracked Lift Housing

Here are some photos of a 'barn fresh' TO 35 that I bought a couple of years ago. It was traded in on a new Kubota and I got it from friends who run the dealership.

It had the original Firestones on the back, but they were unusable, so I got new tires and sandblasted and painted the rims. It is a 1956 model, and if I ever paint it, I might go with Cream/Green.

It has a cracked lift cover, as you can see on one picture. Would this have been caused by the lift going up too high or something else? Would it be better to just replace the whole housing sometime, rather than try to weld the cast iron?

Also, it has a 'growl' in reverse/high range as the gears 'unload' when backing up. Any ideas on this? I don't know if this statement make enough sense or not.

We use it mainly for raking hay and pulling hay wagon. Runs very well, no smoke etc. Sorry, don't know why the pictures uploaded so many times!

Thanks,
Garry

I gave $900 for mine. Dealer who took it on trade just wanted what he allowed on it I guess. Wish it had a 2 stage clutch.

Mine kinda sounded like yours. When you take your
cover off you can get a good look at the ring and
pinion and the pump. This is what I saw in mine.
Ouch! Somebody had been in there before me and
messed up the axle ends, plus a little chippy on the
pinion. :) Here's hoping yours is better.
It looks like a nice find to me, anyway. I'd love to
have one that matches my 56 F40.

DrLoch, Where are you around Mebane? I have a friend who lives on Oak Grove Church Road. He is in the towing, recovery and road service business. He said he hauled a couple of old Fergusons off a farm to the scrapper last year. He didn't know if the were 20s,30s or 35. !! Just our luck.

North east of 119 & 49, very corner of Alamance County, my office is in Durham. I'm a displaced northerner, Michigan. Ask him to give me a call when he picks up any Ferguson tractors I may be interested in buying them depending on the condition. Having access to parts is a must with these old tractors. PM me and I'll give you my e-mail and phone numbers. I built my place specifically to play with old cars but I have a fondness for working on these old tractors for the good old boys around me. These are some pictures of the man cave.
