Brake Shoes ...

I removed one of the brake drums on the TO-20 to replace a stripped stud, and noticed that the lining had partially separated from one of the brake shoes, and about a two-inch chunk of lining was completely gone.

So, I guess I'll be learning how to do a brake job. (I have the Shop Manual.)

My question: do I just replace the one bad shoe? Or, both shoes on that side? Or, just go ahead and do both sides, while the rear wheels are off?

It looks there's plenty of lining left on the good shoe. I haven't had the other side apart yet, but the brakes worked fine.

Both sides!

I am not familiar with TO20 brakes, but you may need to check the linings are centreed and both shoes are free to move.

Some will jump down my throat for printing this ....but.. replacing
one shoe or one lining will work on these brakes as they are self
centralising........But, brake shoes usually come in a set of two, so I
would say replace both shoes on that side and keep the old one as
a spare. You may have to adjust the side wth the new shoes for a
while until they 'bed in'................Sam

I took off the brake drum on the other side, and the linings look OK, BUT: "While I'm At It", I think I'll go ahead and do both sides.

I also grabbed the loose lining on bad shoe on the other side: the lining came completely off of the shoe, and rivets fell everywhere. (It doesn't appear that any of the rivets came loose inside the drum.)

The original Shop Manual says that the linings are now bonded to the shoes, and rivets aren't used anymore. (Do I have some very old linings, or did some manufacturers continue to use rivets?)

It's possible those are the original shoes. Or they
could have been relined.

Rebuilders use the equipment they have, if they
were set up to rivet, they would have used rivets.
Set up for bonding, they would have bonded them.

Be careful with that stuff, those are probably
asbestos linings!
