I polarized the generator and the amp gauge no longer shows a discharge although it only shows about half a needles worth of charge. also the temp gauge is working now although I am not sure if the water is circulating properly. sure wish I would have tested the new thermostat as I have done others.

I don't think you'll see a huge swing on the amp gauge unless your battery is quite discharged.
As far as the temp gauge, are you sure it's a standard mechanical gauge or does it have electrical wiring to it, other than the backlight?

I love my laser gun temp gauge off the web for around 17 bucks, takes all the guess work out and shows which cyl. is not firing. The new guages off ebay seem to need a good boiling to get off zero.ps (on the stove)

On the same track as Inno here, if your gauge kept reading 10 or 15 volts all day, then that battery is shot and will be dead in the morning anyway. A good battery only needs a couple amps every now and then while running.
I never here the end of it when I say I never put a thermostat in anything. This is one of the many reasons why.

The thermostat will stop the movement of water through the radiator until the engine is up to temp.

It will then slowly allow the heated coolant to move through the radiator. If you feel warm air being drawn off the radiator by the fan, then it is circulating.

after a few minutes of running the top of radiator gets hot but looking into the rad. I cannot see the water moving. the water pump seems to be working fine. quiet as a mouse.(almost)

You may not be able to see the water moving. As long as the engine is not overheating nothing to worry about.

It's very rare to have a water pump fail to pump. They may leak, have bearing failure, but still pump. Only if the impeller falls off will they stop pumping, extremely unlikely.

It's possible the radiator is clogged, but that would be indicated by overheating under heavy load. Again, the air coming through would be cold when the engine was hot.

Over the years someone coulda used stop leak and like on my standard there was little flow thru the block and head.

I thought that too. the inside of the ther. housing is coated with a chalky looking residue.
