I'll let those who have done it answer the specifics of your question. But have you checked the oil level in the back end? If you are lucky it's way over full and just lowering it to the proper level will reduce or eliminate the leakage. Pull out the bottom bolt of the access plates. If oil pours out then it's too full. It's a long shot, I know. But it has happened.

In the meanwhile, here's a similar question from the archives some years back.

When I bought my 54 TO 30 the owner said the brakes just needed to be adjusted. After I mowed with it for a year with no brakes I decided to adjust the brakes. Grease and oil covered the shoes. Bad rear seals. The inner seals are easy. The outer seals were shot. You need to pull the axels to get the retainer rings off to get to the outer seals. If you have mechanical ability you can do it. You should also plan on replacing the shoes as the oil will soak into the linings and you can't get it out. Buy a shop manual and use this blog as a resource. Go for it!
