TO35 how she runs

I put up a short video on YouTube http://youtu.be/Z1-R_kOqDww
Took the old girl for a little run up the road today after trying to clean up some of the slop from the yard. I noticed while watching the video that the throttle creeps up as I'm going down the driveway before I even make the turn on to the road. Anyway, I have been fighting with the governor for quite a while and I still don't think it's working properly. How does it sound to you guys?

when the next election comes around don't vote for that sucker again. the dog did not look nun too happy about being disturbed. as a former mailman I was brought to tears at how well you cleared your mailbox area.
oh yea, the 35 sounded like 35.
happy motoring.

If you are concerned about the governor, jerk the
front end off and install a new one. That governor
must work if you are going to plow or pull ground
engaging tools. Have engine warm, place transmission in second high, mid throttle, let out on clutch with brakes engaged. Does the engine speed up to pull the load; simple yes or no answer, if no then the governor is not working. Also, same procedure then drop the plow or disc, motor speeds up and pulls.

What rpm's were you running at road speed, is the
tachometer working?

Is your tractor a 56 or 57 model?

Well that's the thing Maxwell, the governor does sort of work. From an idle, if you quickly open the throttle, the governor arm goes all the way forward then quickly snaps back so as it won't go over RPM. But when you put a load on it, it does not seem to be reacting. You can see a very slight movement of the governor arm but not enough. My 202 (same engine) reacts immediately when the RPM drops. I've had the timing cover off, confirmed that the governor and all it's balls are in tact and everything moves smoothly. I've verified the oil hole is open and that it's getting oil. I've made sure the bumper screw is not making any contact with the bumper spring and that the bumper spring is not too far out from the timing cover. I have renewed all the sloppy old ball joints from the throttle linkage and adjusted as per instructions from John (UK) as I did with the 202 and still it doesn't work as it should. The only thing I didn't do was replace the bearings where the governor shaft goes through the timing cover. This is something I will do as soon as I find a source for the bearings.

It is a 1959. As far as I can determine the digital tach is working. I believe it was a little higher than it is supposed to be at about 2300RPM.

Inno, funny thing is this morning I was wondering how the gov. issue was coming along and to come home to hear a video!! At first I thought the idle was too high until you stopped the second time so now I think its the slop in the clevis pin on the gov. arm. Put some heat shrink around it or weld up the hole and re-drill. Its that close! Sounds like 150 compression!!

I wish that were all it was.........I re-drilled and put in a larger pin just last week. My 202 has more slop there. At higher RPM it does seem to work somewhat. I think I'll take care of the throttle creep next, that may be part of what I think is a governor issue.
Compression? 135 on 1-2-4, 130 on 3, and a little bit of blow by. Put 15W40 in this time 'round but the exhaust still stings the eyes a little bit. It'll be good for mosquito season. I do think it's getting better the more I run it though, when I first got it you'd be driving then all of a sudden a big puff of blue exhaust then back to it's normal light haze. I can get it to idle down below 400 RPM but can't see any real reason to keep it idling down there. Seems to get carboned up more if I leave it sit for awhile idling.

Didn't you almost run over that same dog in your last video? That dog gotta get a new hobby..
And you are complaining about what sir? You could go into town, fork over 30 or 40 grand and be no better off than with this creampuff!
Springs... did we talk about springs yet? And how I needed 2 extras until my 30 was broken in? I just hooked old screen door and car carb springs in whatever positions the thing would run best, but eventually it came down to looking like factory- or sorta kinda...

Naw, it was probably her brother. Neither one of them are ever too impressed with anything. And they are ALWAYS where you want to walk or drive...........always!
What am I complaining about? I guess I need to take a video of the 202.
Springs are definitely on the short list of parts I want/need. Again, can find compensating spring, can't find plunger spring. Need MF dealer..........hopefully they can still get these for me.
I think you might have owned my 202 before I got it. It had an extra spring or 3! Maybe that was a common fix back in the day.

Can't stand one creeping, make sure the rod attached to carb is pushing against the govenor arm. Maybe the blowby will cease once the rings seat.
