jumping a 6V fergie with 12V ?

If you will touch the 12 volt to the big lug on the starter where the battery cable is,nothing will get fried. Just hook the jumper cables to the 12 volt battery like normal then hook the ground on the other end to a good ground on the tractor and then touch the stud on the starter with the 12 volt hot.

Like Jason said, jump it straight to the starter, just be sure it's in neutral!

But... That may only work with a low battery, not a completely dead battery. You still need enough battery to make ignition spark.

What I would NOT do is connect the jumper cables to the battery and let it sit connected to a running vehicle to charge the battery. Not for more than a few seconds anyway. That can damage the battery, cause it to boil off explosive gas, not good when the cables are arcing and sparking!

If you do jump to the battery, make it as quick as possible, get it started and disconnected ASAP.

Not advisable to connect a 12v battery directly to a 6v battery! Can create an instant firecracker! And your eyes will be one of the first things to be hit. As Steve stated, if the 6v battery has a little juice in it, it will create a spark, (just don't forget to turn the switch on,) then connect the 12v as instructed. Ground the battery to a good spot on the tractor, and connect the hot cable to the starter lug where the battery cable connects. It has been a while since I have had to do this, but, if I remember correctly, since your 6v system is positive ground, ground the positive side of the 12v battery and connect the negative side to the starter, just like the 6v system.

Ok its bad for the battery.

Nobody said anything about the ignition coil or the voltage regulator. I'm hoping they are not screwed.

If you are jumping it off like we told you it doesn't effect the coil or regulator. If you jumped it off 12 volt battery to 6 volt battery then it is possible. I would figure it would damage the battery before anything else.

Ben, I had an Allis Chalmers CA that the starter would hardly turn over when it was hot, and I was bad to kill the engine when using a bottom plow, because I would just let it keep lugging until it gave up. I would get a 12v battery and jump start it like we said, and never had any problems with the coil or regulator because they were out of the circuit at the time. Now if you hooked the batteries together, yes, it could damage the coil, not sure about the regulator.

Actually, it doesn"t matter which side of the 12 v battery is connected to ground and which side is connected to the top post of the starter. The starter doesn"t care about polarity.

Yeah, it's bad for them too. VR especially I would think. It's pretty delicate. To clarify a little on Jason's technique, just touch the second cable, don't attach it. Doesn't matter which cable is which. Starter doesn't care about polarity. And as mentioned, be sure tractor is out of gear with switch on. Left rear wheel could run over you otherwise.

just started working on a TE-20. took starter out and connected it to 6v battery, it spins but the bendix gear does not move out to end of shaft as I expected. But I realize now I connected positive cable to the starter lug so I thought I was spinning it backwards, but I see someone said starter does not care about polarity - any advice?
