Finally my plow is ready

After searching for parts for almost two years my reverse engineered Ferguson plow is ready. I had to rebuild the tail wheel with a NOS bearing housing, new leaf spring, new pins, and new plates. Then I found some original Ferguson coulters, coulter brackets, eyebolts, jointer arms, jointers, and coulter chains. I had already put new shares and shins on it. So now all I need is to paint it Ferguson gray, add a Ferguson plate, and shine the moldboards up. Then use it in the next few weeks.

Well done !. They are a really deceptive implement , look simple enough but there are literally dozens of parts making them up . My pet hate is the ridiculous use of needle roller bearings in the furrow wheel . I can't imagine why they used them there when a simple bush would have been enough .

It is a 2 14" and I usually pull it with my TO-20, although I had the plow before I bought my TO-20 and I pulled it with my MF 175 back then but that tractor is way too big for that plow but it was all I had at the time so that is what I used.

The reason I had to rebuild the tail wheel was the bearings in the housing. They were frozen solid to the shaft. I heated it with the acetylene torch until it was glowing and I still could not get the shaft to budge. I ended up splitting the bearing housing with a cut off wheel and then cutting the bearings and finally got it apart. The spring was broken when I got it and that was probably from being frozen up. I did save the old bearing housing and I welded it up and put new bearings in it and I set it back in case I ever need it, but for now I'll leave the NOS one on the plow. After Ferguson and Ford split the Dearborn plows used a fixed tail wheel design. Although the Ferguson floating design is more complicated I do think it's a better design. I like it so well that the Dearborn 2 12" slatted moldboard plow I have is getting a Ferguson floating tailwheel installed on it. Don't tell the Ford purists...lol.

Now we will take bets on how long the coulters stay there! Was the field you intend to do plowed lately? Otherwise, shallow rocks or shallow patience will put those things back in the shed... or thrown on a stonewall..
Is it warm enough to plow there too? You got Irish weather in Tennessee? Send me a little map, and my seed potatoes can start walking to your place....

Oh I have plenty of rocks here Tony. We have had good plowing weather here but I was trying to wait as long as I could since I planted a cover crop of winter rye. I will probably plow within the next week or two so the winter rye can rot down and I can get started planting by the first of may. Don't worry I am going to take pictures and video my plowing with the plow set up like it is now. You may have to be 18 to watch it because of all the profanity if I do encounter troubles while plowing...lol. I have enough problems when I hit the clay section at the end of the garden. It will slow you tremedously. Worse case scenario if I have problems I will unhook the moldboard plow and hook up the disc plow...never any problems using it.
