hopefully next week my son, sil and myself will have my 35 ready to fire up. I bought it as a non runner. the engine does turn over (by hand) but since it has not been running and I do not know how many years it sat what steps should I take to avoid damaging the engine in case there is something internally wrong with it ?
thanks.

as far as the engine goes not a whole lot. I turned it over by hand, took off the valve cover and everything seemed ok. not very dirty.
now we need to attach fuel line and wiring and we should be good to go ?????

#1 pull spark plugs-couple squirts oil in every cylinder-spin over 4-5 times then reinstall plugs.why?TO give the pistons and rings a good lubrication/a good seal for suction-suck fuel uphill into the cylinders.have u checked-carb-points sediment bowl-inside of gastank?i bought a 1939 allis B non runner last year, had'nt run in many many years.had to pull gastank and clean 3 times.GOOD LUCK and let us know please.

The only thing that comes to mind that would damage the engine would be if it were to not have oil pressure when it started. Since you have the valve cover off, I would start it up with the cover off, watch to see that all the rockers drip oil, then check the valve lash.

And since the gas tank is off... Have you looked inside for rust? Good assumption it will be rusty if it's original and been stored outside.

Providing the engine is good, the transmission will need to be drained and flushed. Notorious for collecting water. It gets in around the shifter boots and the upper three point mount boot.

An easier job on a z129... but to take off the oil pan, clean out the old gunk and tap the bearing caps with a soft mallet is something to consider. Especially if you find 3 pounds of shredded metal in there...
