clutch noise

On my TO-30 the clutch is functional. But every time the pedal is depressed there is a noise similar to the sound made by sand paper. When the pedal is released everything is normal.

What is it?

If you're real lucky, it might be some rust on the flywheel or pressure plate. If it is, it will wear off and be fine.

But... Most likely it's the beginning of the release bearing failure. Have to split the tractor to fix that.

yea, steve is rite however if you can put up with the noise it will probably work like that for a long time, but if you go in replace all you can afford and be done with it

Noise with the clutch pedal pushed in is a faulty release bearing. The clutch disc has been released by the fywheel and is not turning.
Noise with the clutch pedal released is a faulty input shaft bearing in the transmission. The clutch disc is fully engaged and unless slipping will not make noise at all. If slipping badly it should make a foul odor similiar to overheated brakes.

Release bearing is probably out of grease. If you replace the clutch, Kevlar clutches do not freeze to the flywheel. However, Kevlar is far less forgiving of slippage.

Do some research. Wife's Fergy '20 is Kevlar. 80 hours and no problems. Yet. Have not blocked the clutch since install, never stuck.

Looking at clutch kits found on this site. There seem to be two kinds for the TO-30 with slightly different hubs. How do I know which one I need. Or would either one work?

9" rigid clutch disc 10 spline 1-1/8" hub
(Part No: 1212-1610)

9" clutch disc 10 spline 1-3/8" hub
(Part No: 1212-6001)
