Hi All,

I am restoring a 1951 ted20. When I got it it had an original white oil pressure guage and a black faced ammeter. I am pretty sure it should have a temp gauge and I guess the ammeter was added when converted to 12v. Does anyone know which type is the correct temp gauge for this period? Note that this TED does not have air in take on dash for some reason. Is this correct? I thought all TED"s were built with this.

Thanks for your help

Steve

My thinking is that the dash air intake came in with the 85mm engines. 85mm engines were introduced at S/N 172501. The gas and TVO changed to 12 volt at S/N 200001. Others more familiar with the UK tractors will chime in shortly I am sure.

Richard nailed it.

85mm engines were introduced at S/N 172501. The gas and TVO changed to 12 volt at S/N 200001.

Your tractor originally had only [u:9515be385f]one[/u:9515be385f] gauge, the white oil pressure gauge.

If you are restoring the engine I think you can install the 85 mm sleeves in an 80 mm block. I don't think 80 mm sleeves are available.

I2 volt and 85mm engines along with the air vent in the dash were introduced at serial number 200,001 on the 21st of January 1951.
The correct temperature gauge for a TED of that year is available here

This is a photograph of an original still in use on a working tractor , this particular style was fitted from about 1951 through to 1954

Two others show a six and a twelve volt dash , with and without air cleaner vent .

Great, So it looks like my 1951 TED was a 6V with just oil pressure gauge. Later converted to 12V and ammeter added. Can I check with you all.....the correct temp gauge for this period is advertised as "6V". I cant see any reson why voltage would matter, I assume it means "as fitted to 6V tractors"

Thanks again

Steve

The TED had two gauges, as it was important to know the water temp before switching over to TVO fuel. Hence it had the original white faced oil gauge and a matching white faced temp gauge, but it also used the gauge as posted by Charles. Try to find originals as these new gauges look OK but are never the same......Sam

Confused now. I had also read that the TED's had a temp gauge so as to check for at least 75 deg before switching over. Not sure which gauge would be correct for a TED registered in March 1951. My feeling from the posts so far, is that it probably didnt have a temp gauge originally and they added this in later models???

All factory produced TED20 tractors had a temperature gauge fitted as standard . Those that were converted to run on TVO after market almost always had one retro fitted as well . As Sam said , a white faced one or one similar to those I posted is the correct sort for a 1951 model.
