My pto on my MFN 135 was being hard to engage.now the lever just goes all the way back and won't engage pto.what would be the problem and a fix?

Sounds like 2 problems, hard shifting has lead to no shifting.

Start by removing the shift lever plate on the left side of the trans case. You may loose a little oil, but not much. This is a simple shift fork arrangement that slides the PTO gear forward and backward.

Once it's off, you will probably find either a roll pin sheared or the lever is bent or broken.

Next is to determine why it broke. The gear that the lever moves should slide easily and smoothly by hand on it's splined shaft. If it is not movable, you will need to remove it and see why. This is relatively easy. It all comes out through the top. A manual will be very helpful.

Have you changed the trans oil lately? These are known for collecting water, especially if stored uncovered. It gets in through the shifter boots and the draft link boot under the seat.

If it was grinding as you tried to engage PTO, then it maybe adjustment of the PTO clutch or you have too much play in the pedal. There should be 3/8" of free play measured under the footrest to the top of the Clutch Lever arm. If it is the Lever on the side that is loose like you seem to say, remove the Round Plate with the Lever and you may have just sheared the pin through the lever, this is easily replaced. You will lose some oil when you remove the Plate. If you are having trouble with the clutch adjustment, email me and I will send you the information that you need to re-set it.. If it is grinding and you keep using it then you will damage the gears that drive the PTO John(UK)[email protected]
