Weeping oil - is it ok to drive? fergie TVO

Hi everyone,

I have just finished overhauling the hydraulics - yipee!! they now work a treat!

I have used it for a few hours and all is OK, apart from there is now black engine oil weeping from the bell housing when I come to a stop. I would say that there is a about quarter a cup of oil comes out, then it stops. My research suggests that it now needs a new rear crank seal and that this is big job. Could this oil leak possibly be anything else?

My question is can I live with the oil leak without doing serious damage. Is it Ok to continue using the tractor or do I need to fix it immediately?

Hope someone can help, cheers ray

One of my concerns is that I may have contributed to the problem by accidently adding too much kerosene and running the tractor. Could this possibly cause the problem?

Just keep a check on engine oil and make sure the cotter key(hole) in bottom of housing is kept open. If it doesn't get worse I would say it is OK for now to keep running. The tractor will have to be split to repair.

I assume you washed out the transmission with kerosene? Yes, that could have contributed to it, especially if what your seeing is transmission oil instead of engine oil. It may be black because it's carrying out clutch dust as it runs down.

I think I'd go ahead and run it awhile and see what happens. Mine ran for years with the front trans seal leaking, finally got time to fix it, didn't seem to hurt anything.

I assume your oil levels are good, not overfull. Might want to watch both and see if you develop a pattern of consumption, then keep the level just below full, see if that helps with the leak until you can get in there and fix them... Them as in do both while it's apart.

You can try the only magic in a can I will use, and that is any Lucas product that applies.

What you did with the rear should not have effected the rear main. You probably filled it too quickly causing it to overflow into the bell housing which along with the other mixture of kerosine, old oil and fluid came out black.

On my old to35 that leaks a little oil from the
front of the transmission shaft.

With lift arms in the up position,so cylinder is
full of oil, I never fill the transmission/hydraulic
sump over 1/2 way on the dip stick. Or to the
center line.

So far this method has worked well.

My up side down cotter key finally broke off last
year so I check that drain hole in the bottom of the <
>trans housing each time I fuel the tractor.

Does any one know if you can replace the up side
down cotter key with out splitting the tractor???

Thanks for the advice guys.

I used the tractor today and there was no problem with leaking oil. I am mightily relieved. I couldn't face the prospect of having to split the tractor so soon after rebuilding the hydraulics.

May-be I added oil too quickly and overfilled the gearbox with oil. Fingers crossed that is Ok for the foreseeable future.

Cheers, ray
