my one TO-35 is a "trailer queen". I run it maybe six times a year. now having said that how often would you guys change the engine oil and oil filter? the engine has nine (9) hours on the rebuild and the rebuild is six (6) years old. I did change the oil and filter after about two hours after the rebuild.
thanks.

Oil is usually changed every 50 - 100 hours. I would change it every couple of years based on what you do.

It is also important to warm the engine up REAL good, so you are not doing it any good if just running it to move around. would get out and run it for at least an hour a couple times per year.

I agree, every 2 years should be sufficient. But depending on the conditions, cold, dirt, stored outside, etc. Yearly might be better.

Also I prefer to change the oil at the end of the season, before going into hibernation with possible moisture, acid, or depleted corrosion inhibitors sitting in the crankcase.

Something else I've picked up on, the new automotive oil doesn't have the zinc additive like it used to. It's been removed with the assumption most new engines have roller cams and it's not needed.

Diesel engine oil still has the zinc additive. That's what I use now in everything with flat tappets.

Looks and smell. If it still looks clean and not watery, and smells.. like motor oil, probably still OK. I now buy oil in 5 gallon pails, but its the filters that I wonder about... you hate to change it for what amounts to nothing, but if you don't, are you shooting yourself in the foot for a few bucks?

Steve, you're correct about the zinc additive missing in modern oils. It's ZDDP or Zinc dialyldithiophosphate . This additive is not necessary in many modern engines because they run roller valve trains and there is not a lot of wiping action or side loading on the valves and cam lobes. In our old engines that do run flat tappets there is a lot of wiping load at the cam lobes and I'd highly recommend a heavy duty engine oil with this additive to prevent unwanted or premature wear. Some folks have differing opinions but using a 10w30 diesel oil in my TE-A20 has worked well for me and the oil stays clean.

I found this article on the subject. Take a look. Joe.
Zinc oil additive

I agree with the others, use a good quality Diesel rated oil. I use Delvac, some others use Rotella.
