Fuel gauge not working

Boss Hog

I have an MF 35, and my Dad has an MF 65. The fuel gauges on both of them quit working recently.

Both gauges seem to always have a random reading on on them - They're never pegged at either full or empty. But the reading is never accurate.

I have never worked on these before. Any suggestions where to start, or how to troubleshoot these things?

Try this first...

Locate the fuel gauge sending unit on top of the
tank. Remove the wire, and with the ignition
switch on, ground the wire to any clean metal
surface that you know is grounded back to the
battery. The gauge should go to full. Remove the
wire from ground and the gauge should go to empty.
This will prove if the dash gauge is working
properly.

If this test passes, remove the sending unit and
look for obvious problems, like bent or binding
float arm, rusty connections, etc. Usually it's
best to just replace it.

One more thing to look at...

Be sure the tank itself is properly grounded. Some are rubber mounted with a ground wire between the tank/sending unit and the frame.

Thanks for the help Steve.

I won't be at the farm for a few more days, but I'll check them both out when I get there.
