Why are some generators made without the tach cable hookup? My 50 has it but the 35 does not?

Well... here we go... seems like HF tacks started with 12 volt system models?? ... so 6 volt tractors 'usually' didn't have a tach? BUT, since all good generators put out 20 or 30 volts... and who knows if that gen came out of a 55 Plymouth? Who really used tacks except big trucks, tractors and few factory muscle cars back then? Yeah, my Standard engine, and Perkins 3 have the tack cable in the timing, not off the gen... but the 212 Perkins is suppose to have a tack drive alternator... we'd love to find a pallet full of those things huh??

Tony, as for the tach cable on a standard, don"t ever order one. I"m in the process of sending one back. Ordered 1 for 35 standard petrol and won"t fit on either end but was surprised that it arrived from oversees in just 3 days.

If your generator has the three screws and a plate on back of armature you can add the drive. You may have to drill and tap armature to add drive. I've tapped several.I have a TO 35 I'm building and it had the armature threaded but no drive. All I had to do was add drive. The tap is 3/8 x 32 threads. You can go to archives and there is discussion on it with pictures.

35 'Specials' didn't have a tach and the Perkins diesel 35s had a tach drive connection to the engine so no need for a tach drive on the generator for those. I don't know about the Standard Diesel. Or someone may have just swapped in a different generator over the years. I have a 50 that still has the tach in the dash but the generator currently on it has no drive.

I have a 35 Special (one stage clutch) with a tach drive and a tach that works fine. The tach isn"t an indication of Special vs. Deluxe.
