Z134 mystery noise

We just got the TO35 running after a partial tear
down and paint job.

One of the issues was lifter noise. Replaced the
cam and lifters, though it showed some pitting it
wasn't really worn. Discovered the rocker shaft
and rocker bushings were severely worn, replaced
both.

Started it up and the noise is still there. Reset
the valve lash, even checked with it running. Now
I'm satisfied this is not valve noise, even though
it sounds exactly like a loose rocker adjustment.

The engine runs and idles fine. Looked at the
valve springs, hand tested them, all appear good.
The rockers are oiling good. Whats strange is the
noise is intermittent, sometimes barely there,
sometimes really annoying!

But what tells me it's not lifter noise, is by
pulling the #4 plug wire, the noise goes away. I
went through the engine about 20 years ago, new
pistons and liners, new bearings. It's been used
sparingly since then, still has the same good oil
pressure, no smoke or blow-by.

I'm thinking loose wrist pin or loose/cracked
piston skirt. Is this a common failure for this
engine? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Steve, Hello, I went through the same deal with my z134,About drove me nuts. Sounded like lifter noise in the front of the engine, Didn't do it all the time. When it was doing it one day i took the belt loose to rule out the accessories and the noise stopped.Turned out to be the water pump bearings. I took it apart and some of the rollers were square from snagging and trying to lock up. I almost didn't take it off as it turned free and made no noise turning by hand. Don't run it to long with the belt off or it will get hot.-hope this helps-ed

my to35 1957 model started making a mystery noise in the motor.

turns out, it was the crankshaft pulley bolt loose, it had not been off in 10+ years.

why it worked loose, I not know,

but clean it applied lock tight and reinstalled it, motor noise was gone.
worth a look see!!!!

Have you thought about it being the rear camshaft bearing? Use a stethoscope on the engine to localise the sound...John(UK)
