TO-35 Clutch Question

Hello, I need to replace the drive clutch on my TO-35, 1955, I dont have it apart yet, but is there a thickness measurement of the inner pressure plate?

And the thickness of a new clutch disc?

I would like to be sure that there is not excessive wear on that plate before putting in a new clutch disc.

Also I get confused on part numbers for this clutch disc, Could someone tell me what part number to order.

Thanks,
Tim

I had the clutch replaced in my 1957 TO35. It has the double clutch.
I may have gotten worked over but good on the fix, as I was told my clutch/pressure plate had to be sent back and rebuilt.

Before I got it going it was long trip, but it"s worked good for the last few years.

I got the tractor stuck and mud plugged up the clutch housing drain hole, oil got on the clutch pad.

Just be sure the repair shop can get a replacement clutch set before they take it apart.
Also be sure the repairman insures he installs an up side down cotter key in the bell housing drain hole.

You need to set the Clutch to with NEW Plates. You check if the plate is suitable for further service by checking the depth of the rivet heads below the surface of the friction material of the Plate. Providing there is some decent depth then you can use the plate again, if there is any doubt then always use a new Plate. The plate will be most worn on the side nearest the Clutch. What type of Clutch do you have, the later one had one with a combination of Coil Springs and Belleville spring (shaped like a saucer) this was used from serial 177395. The Clutch MUST be set with NEW Plates. The Clutch lever pivot points need checking for wear, if there is wear, no amount of setting will cure and Clutch Problems

I should also have said that there is no thickness quoted for the plates as they do vary depending on the manufacturer and this is also another reason that you have to set-up the Clutch each time. Even if you got a brand new Clutch, you would have to re-set the Levers because of the plate thickness. John(UK) [email protected]

Thanks John, I put in a PTO disc 3 years ago, the clutch disc should have been done also, dont know what I was thinking..Its a belleville spring type.

If I remember right, the larger disc (clutch) sit against the flywheel, then the clutch plate, so your saying if I replace the clutch disc, I should replace the clutch plate also as a set?

Sorry for the confusion, head injury a few years ago really messed up my thinking..

Thanks John,
Tim

It will depend on if the Clutch is marked or scored on the pressure Plate that you change it. The wheel drive Clutch is the biggest Plate and that goes next to flywheel and the PTO Plate is the smaller one nearest the tractor.
No need to replace the steel Plate/disk that is part of the Clutch unless it is marked. You do need to set-up the Clutch using NEW Clutch Plates (friction Disks) and if the old plates are still OK to use then you can use them again. Problem is borrowing new Plates to set-up the Clutch, but using new plates is the only way. If you need any more info about any of this and the repairs to the Clutch, just email me again at the address below...John(UK)... [email protected]
