TO 35 Broken starter motor nose cone

OK my starter was acting up and I removed it to find the nose cone broken. I pulled the inspection plate and I found two nose cone pieces . Now , Norm the rebuilder says this is very common on the Ferguson starter. He says in has something to do with the engine kicking back and can brake the nose cone. It is from, timing or using to much ether. I don't use ether and my timing should be good. It starts right up with not much drag on the starter. I have pro-tronics and it is easy to start. Also the armature was really bent.Your thoughts would be welcome .

thank you

That's a good question...
I doubt that timing or either has anything to do
with it, small engine, heavy flywheel isn't going
to have much kick back power.

You said it was acting up before it completely
broke, what were the symptoms?

Are there any missing, worn teeth on the ring
gear? Is the ring gear properly seated against the
stop on the flywheel? Is it possible the starter
drive came apart or failed to disengage? Probably
hard to tell now that it took a hit when the
housing broke.

You're not running a 6 volt starter on 12 volts
are you?

The only other thing that comes to mind is
something came loose from the clutch and wedged
between the flywheel and the starter while it was
running.

So long as it's working good now I think I'd just
keep an ear on it and hope for the best.

Bendix return spring on small starter gear, weak or broken. lets bendix gear SLAM into starter housing extra hard and breaks it. I learned the hard way. Gregg

Gregg ,that makes sense about the spring . That is where it breaks at the nose cone with the bushing in it. I dug out two of them when i removed the clutch inspection cover . I going to call Norm and have him install a new spring when he puts my starter back together. Thanks guys or all your comments and advise.

There should be a spring washer between the Pinion and the Nose Cone, so that the pinion hits the spring washer and this acts as a shock absorber John (UK)

A broken nose cone is usually caused by not letting the starter stop completely before trying again. Also, if you hit the starter when the engine is rocking back from a non-start. When I worked at a Massey dealer in the "60s, we kept a few noses in stock for the diesel starters. I still remember the starter number: 1107512.

Hello! What Norm the rebuilder said is true, When
my 35 was still 6 volt, On a cold winter day I
went out to start it and it was turning over so
slow that it fired before top dead center and
kicked over backwards and broke the nose cone.
I welded it back up, and when it was real cold I
jumped the starter with 12 volt, starts right up
that way, now mater how cold it gets.
I later converted to 12 volt, That worked good
till i started using the tractor a lot and the
battery got charged good then the starter started
slaming in hard and broke it again. So i bought a
12 volt starter and have no problems since.
Those are the 2 reasons the nose cone breaks that
i know of.- Hope this helps- ed

I think it is possible to have the mechanical advance hang advanced on occasion and when cranking kick back and break nose cone.

Dunner, Hello, My tune up specs calls for 6 deg. advanced. And they advance to 23 deg. or so at 2000 rpm to compensate for engine speed as it takes a little time for the dist. to fire the cylinder.
When it's cranking normal speed, by the time the cylinder fires it's already past tdc.I would think. When it's turning so slow you can watch the fan blades go around and it fires at 6 deg. it's likely to kick over backwards-Just my opinion. Have a good Holiday-ed

I went to Norms this morning too get my starter and check the bendix spring. The spring was ok and while I was talking to Norn I asked him what the start was 6 or 12 volt, he answered 6, so I asked hin change it to 12. I think this is my problem ad under the circumstances so does Norm. The timing is good, it starts immediately and I never have to use ether . so we will see. You can bet i am going to keep an eye on it. The starter rebuild with new Armature . 12 volt fields new drive labor $350.00 . I know I can get a new one cheaper but Norm started on it and ordered parts and I couldn't back out. Just part of the fun of owning an old Ferguson Tractor, I guess. Thanks guys for all you comments and help. I put Protronics in Fergie and replaced the Points , that is why it starts fast no kick back. I am going to get a new crank for it though.
