TO30 rear axle seals???

Hello all. Got to replace the rear axle seals on my 1951 TO30. Does anyone know of any videos or guides to getting it done? Never been into the rear end of the tractor. What all seals should be replaced while it's apart? etc. Thanks

The TO30 already has 2 seals fitted to each axle, are you sure that you don't just have too much oil in the axle. Remove the bottom screw out of one of the round port covers on the side below the seat and allow any oil that runs out until it stops, there is too much in there.. If you do wish to replace these seals it is unlike the TO20 which only has one. The shafts need to be removed and the collars drilled off and the Hubs pulled off. If you email me I will send you the information you need and you need to replace both seals and the gaskets either side of the Brake Back Plate. It isn't an easy job because of pulling the hubs off....email [email protected]

John (UK) has the correct procedure for the OEM seals. You could use "Sure Seals" and pack the bearings with short fiber wheel bearing grease.
Then seal the Gaskets with Permatex #2 or Gray RTV on final assembly. You can use a 3' section of ABS pipe to drive the seal into position over the axle.

Thanks Bruce and John for the info. on the seals. Will check for too much oil tomorrow, sounds like it"s quite a job to replace the seals so hopefully it"s just too much oil.

Hi, Do yourself a favor and use the "shur seals"
as stated. Turns it into a small job. I'll bet
this site has them-directions on the box? Chuck

Really not that bad. If rear tires are loaded, be careful when you remove the wheels and keep them upright; don't let them fall and keep kids and pets away in case they do fall. The screws in the hubs are sometimes troublesome. These screws are not really necessary, so if you mess one up, it's no big deal. Pay attention to the shims when you remove them and put them back same way. You can take the axle to a machine shop and have them remove and replace the one seal that is pressed on. The other one is easy. Probably best to remove one axle at a time, but when you put axle(s) back with both wheels elevated if you turn one forward the other should turn backward and vice versa. Otherwise adjust the shims. If other doesn't turn means too loose, and if it turns same way it means too tight. Go slow and be careful and it isn't that big a job. Don't put the Ford universal hydraulic oil in it like some dealers sometimes recommend, as it leaks past the seals easier. Use motor oil, or GL-1.

John,
Can you please send me the same instructions? I am intending on using the sureseals, but need to know how to remove and replace the axles. Wheels are already off-my dad started the project a little while before he died. I could use the help. Thanks.
