I just converted my TO 35 to 12v neg from 6v pos. I used a 12v chevy coil that had a built in rester in it and so far haven"t had a problem. Only ran it for maybe 2 hr"s though.

My 54 Te-a20 kept burning points too. Tried new coil with correct resistance, new condensers, new points, could not get the points to last more than maybe twenty hours tops. I finally installed a Pertronix unit and have had no problem at all in over a year. It starts better and idles smoother and has more grunt than ever before. I just don't believe you can buy superior quality points anymore. Just my two cents. Joe

My Cadse 300 was converted to 12 volt when I got it in 1994. I had some problems with points and such. Finally I installed an internal resistor 12 volt coil - 15 years later I still have no complaints. I just did the same to my TO030 -ditched the external resistor - got a new one with internal resistor and it runs great.

The points do not care if it's 6 or 12 volts. Only the coil cares about the voltage and needs a resistor if it's not a true 12 volt coil. Where are you getting your points from?

Both mine, one with points, one with Pertronix electronic kit, use coils with internal resistor. I've had no problems with either.

Backfire and popping is usually related to trash in fuel or carb problems, but I suppose a bad condensor or pitted points or a partially grounded hot wire would cause a sputter.
