It should be as simple as removing the old generator and it's associated wiring and running a wire from the batt. to the alternator, thru the ammeter (if equipped). If your wiring is orig. there should be a black with yellow striped wire going to the regulator, that is the one that would go to the alternator battery output. If the wiring is not orig. it would be the wire going to the "B" terminal of the regulator.
 
You wouldn't need the VR at all. I guess it wouldn't hurt to leave it in place but disconnect the wires. Are you thinking about looks or functionality?
