Rodent free storage Question

what to use to keep the mice from building nest in my tractor, jeep and 4 wheeler.

vehicles are stored in my open-end equipment shed.

last year while doing spring tune-up on the 4 wheeler, I found at least 30+ pieces of my mice/rat bait inside of the air cleaner housing on my 4 wheeler.

In time the material may have killed the mice, but not before they had a good supply built up for winter.

I just do not want them around my vehicles as they can destroy seats, wiring etc:

any tips are appreciated:

I have 3 lazy cats out there that live in the barns, but maybe I am feeding them too much.

what brand mice bait do you use that has worked?
 
Unless you are afraid of them, snakes are the best rat trap there is. I don"t allow anyone to kill a snake here unless it"s a poisonous one here at the house.
 
I have read that bars of "Irish Spring" soap laid in areas of your vehicles will keep mice away without harming any equipment or pets. HTH Dick
 
I have good mousers, feed them only in the morning and just enough so bowl is empty by night. Corn field is within 30 feet of the house and shed. chris
 
i have found that fabric softner sheets seem to work pretty good,have used in camper and combine so far aand really helped,just spread the little sheets out in diferent area
 
For large rats we use coke-cola in a jar lid or small container around in different spots in barn or feed bin. A rat can't burp and it will die. Don't know if it will work on mice. May be worth a try.
 
Dick, Irish spring may work, I don't know the formula that they use. However, since a lot of soaps contain animal fat, mice and rats will chow down on it! I have even seen them eat homemade lye soap.
 
A vehicle doesn't have to be stored in a building, either. I have a pickup that I drive very little. Last week I opened the drivers side door and cranked it without getting inside. I was standing there working the throttle pedal with my walking stick, when all of a sudden a field mouse appeared from under the dash. Startled both of us, he ran back under the dash, and I said, Oh crap! I turned on the heater blower and sure enough, paper, cotton and whatever came flying out the vents.
Now I have two jobs to do.First, I have to find a suitable home for the little feller so he won't freeze to death this winter, (yeah, right! LOL), then I got to clean out all those vents.
 
In grain harvest season here I use a few of these with peanut butter as the bait:

Most people dunk the trap in water to drown their catch but softy me takes the trap out in the bush, far enough from my home so they can't find their way back, and releases the catch! :oops:

I don't know where the mice go during winter? We've had plagues in some years - could catch up to ten mice in the house at night - but not a mouse anywhere for about eight months of the year.

Wheat harvest time now, followed by sorghum harvest. Expect the mice to appear any time soon.

You'd think twice about encouraging snakes in Australia. With the exception of the rare python and green tree snake, all are venomous with the most common snakes, the red belly black, king brown and black snakes being amongst the most venomous in the world. They can kill domestic pets in minutes.

My neighbor does boat motor repair and shrink wraps. Before he puts the plastic on he puts 3 small aluminum pans of moth balls in the boat or raft. He laughs at me because I put 4 pie tins of mothballs in my boat and another pie tin around each garage door inside. I told him the balls are cheap and I don't want to see any droppings in the spring.

Snakes ! this one was the last to find its way into the cottage on my farm . As much as I don't like rats and mice I would rather see them than this one's brothers and sisters

There is a clever 'bush ' mouse trap used here . Put cheese or peanut butter into the neck of a beer bottle , grease the last two inches of the neck with butter , overhang the bottle horizontally on a box or wooden chair and fasten so the last third is over a 5 gal. drum half filled with water . Mouse smells bait , climbs box or chair and walks onto bottle , reaches neck , tries to get bait , slips on greased neck , falls into the water and drowns .
Used in grain storages this method catches hundreds at the one setting,a bit nasty cleaning the drum out though :(
 
My wifes mother uses cement laced corn meal, turns them into little statues. I hate to drown them after the sticky pad catches one.
