when standing in front of the tractor and using a hand crank what direction is the hand crank turned to turn over the engine. I am thinking to the right. oh lordy let me right.

I glad you asked that, S - 'cause I was about to!

I took a closer look at the Big Nut in front of the engine (how's that for a set-up!) and figured that the crank would only engage the nut if you were cranking clockwise.

When the crank turns counter-clockwise, as when the engine starts, it looks like it will dis-engage from the slots on the nut.

A related question: I don't have a hand crank. When I'm setting valves, etc. will I be able to turn the engine by using a big crescent wrench on the nut? (I'd think so, since the hand crank handle isn't very long.)

Yes Tom, you can just turn it with a wrench on the crank bolt.If you have the spark plugs out and the fan on the engine you could turn it with the fan too.

If you crank start a enging , DO NOT grab the crank with a grip like a fist . You hold your thumb down along your index finger , and pull up on the crank . If it kicks back , you want it to open your fingers .
If you are gripping it with your fist wrapped around the crank , it will dislocate your wrist , or worse .

" dumbest question ever...." ?? No, it is smart if you have never hand cranked an engine before. The dumbest is the one that was never asked.
