If you have to thread a nut onto the bolt and then cut just a little bit off of it to make it short enough to clear the spring and thread in. After you cut it remove the nut and it will help straighten the threads on the end where you cut it.

I cheated, and bought a slightly shorter bolt.

The new bolt also had a 5/8" head, rather than Harry's original 11/16", so it was easier to get the head past the spring.
