TO 30 WIRING

I need help. I am trying to help a retired neighbor who has this tractor. It has burned up all the wiring twice now. This tractor has an alternator. He says it was originally 6 volt and his uncle changed to 12 volt about 15 years ago. He says it is positive ground. I don't know why it started burning the wires, it was running good for all those years. The alternator has a two wire plug with a red and black heavy gage wire. Then a separate post with one wire. I read a previous post that said if there is an alternator, it must be negative ground. Is that correct? I have looked at many posts, Ferguson sites, wiring diagrams, but none showing 12 volt positive ground. I see a coil, 12v battery, distributor, amp gage, alternator, no resistor or diode, but maybe I've missed it, and a regulator that is not hooked up. Could someone provide me with proper + and - connections to each component so I can get this correct? Please help!

Unless specially modified modern alternators must be connected negative ground. It probably ran all those years with the alternator connected negative ground, then someone replaced the battery and installed it positive ground. That immediately wiped out diodes in the alternator and caused the burned wires.

The tractor was originally positive ground but can run either positive or negative if properly configured.

Have the alternator checked and be prepared to replace it. I would recommend 10 gauge wire from alternator to ammeter and from ammeter to battery connection at starter solenoid.

The diode is to insure that the engine turns off when switch is turned off.

Regulator not hooked up is probably left over from generator days. It can be removed or continue to just go along for the ride.
