Settling bulb won't seal up

Hello all --

I'm surely not the best mechanic out there but I'd like to think I'm a little experienced. Lately settling bulb gaskets have been getting the best of me; and not just one or two either. I've had no luck with cork or neoprene gaskets to fit the N model Fords or TO-20 / TO-30 Fergs in the last year or so. I've even resorted to changing two complete settling bulb assemblies (TISCO0 but they still leak even with the factory gasket in there.

Tight, loose, teflon tape, nothing seems to help. Is this an ethanol thing? Hopefully I'm just overlooking the obvious.

Tisco sediment bowls are pretty poor quality. Have you tried getting the gaskets from a Napa? I have heard of people soaking the cork gaskets in gas first so they swell up a bit. Personally I only use sediment bowls either from Agco or Sparex because they are of better quality and I have had no issues using them.

There are different size sediment bowl gaskets. Could you be getting wrong size. They are close to same size. I use the cork gasket. Local parts dealer has both sizes.

I"ve had much the same issue with cork gaskets shrinking when I take them out and they won"t re-swell. A new one usually works until I empty the bowl two or three times. One problem I found was that the mesh screen sometimes slips to one side and gets between the housing and gasket and no amount of tightening will stop the leak. I now keep a couple of home-cut gaskets made from a sheet of rubberized gasket material that is a little thicker than the cork gaskets. Years ago my Dad used a gasket he made by laying the mesh screen on a piece of polyethylene and casting an RTV silicone ring around the outside and placing another piece of polyethylene over it then, when cured, cutting the outside to size. He used metal plates to make sure it was flat and placed a few pennies around it to keep the plates, and thus the gasket, at a uniform thickness.

NAPA part no. 730-9506.

I have found in the past that I have a tendency to over tighten the bowl. sometimes you have to "fiddle" around for awhile to find a happy place for the gasket.

Check that the face that touches the gasket is actually flat and doesn't have a moulding mark on it. We have also use valve grinding paste on some flat glass and rubbed the Bowl across that to make sure it is flat John(UK)

Don't forget to check the bowl itself. Sometimes minute cracks will develop at the lip because of over tightening and they are so small you can hardly see them. GLASS ISN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE.

I totally agree - in the past, I have had problems with leaks everytime I cleaned the sediment bowl. After purchasing the American- made one from New Holland dealer, no more problems.

i've had trouble with the screen being cut over size and being under the gasket.

Thanks guys. I think I"ll give NAPA a shot and look closer at the fit of the screen in the housing.

Unfortunately, no New Holland dealers anywhere close.
