TO-35 Hyd/Trans oil update

just got back from going all over town talking to the counter boys about oil.

but, no luck so far, no multi viscosity non-detergent or low detergent oil to be found
(boy-o-boy did I get some funny looks),

Maybe I am overthinking this problem:

I may just get the sump oil hot, then drain it out and add back GL-1 oil, maybe I can add a bit of zinc additive to help take care of the wear.

and just not worry about it for another 5 years or so.

as others have said, it's worked fine for the last 56 years.

That non detergent 10w30 lawnmower oil at home depot maybe semi synthetic oil and I for sure do not want that oil in the old tractor sump.
scared of it!!!!!!

Glad to see you on here John!!! I have no doubt that 10w30 is better but I think Maxwell is having the same problem I did. We can not find a low or non detergent multigrade on this side of the pond.

got the new fluid installed in my TO-35 today,

GL-1 from NAPA, they have both 1 gal and 5 gal containers.

lift appears to work fine.
I bought a small bottle of zinc additive, I figure they have taken the zinc out of the GL-1 oil, so the zinc might help the old parts slip and slide a little better, w

would you add it to the hyd/trans sump oil or not???

I did find in my tractor notes, that the last time I changed the hyd/trans fluid was 1998, so I was way over due.

but, the fluid looked ok draining out, not as clean as the new fluid, but not milky looking,
my tractor almost never sets out and it has new tight fitting shifter lever boots.

as I was test driving it around tonight, I noticed the amp meter was not reading charge, discharge with the lights on.

so the dance never ends, fix one thing and something else is waiting in line.

keeps me off the streets.

Just use the standard low detergent oil, it won't cause any problems, just change the oil when it should be changed. We have had tractors running with this same oil for a few years now and they perform very well, much better than the old original oil and with no after effects. Actually the oil companies tell me that there is no oil that does not have some detergent no matter how small. The only problem was when heavy gear oil was used that was full of sulfur, but you could smell that and it was far too thick and heavy anyway and should have never been used in a hydraulic system. Low detergent oil is what you would use in a Gas Engine not high detergent that would be used in a Diesel, there is nothing special about it. Just oil for a gas Engine...John(UK)[email protected]

That is what I thought you had said. I also read it in a document you emailed to me on the subject, as long as it is meant for a gas engine then it's fine. I put 10W30 in my TO35 and noticed immediately a difference in the performance of the 3pt hitch. When winter comes I'm sure it will be leaps and bounds better than the GL1!
