Not to be a wise guy, but, did you look on the back? Usually there is a painted mark with 6 or 12 volt and pos or neg ground.

as per your suggestion I looked at the back. it is pretty much rusted over and using a mag. glass I could find no ID on it.

If you have a variable DC power supply, you can connect it between ARM and Ground & raise the voltage until you see or hear the cut out section contacts close or monitor BATT to ground with light or meter (voltage becomes present when cut out contacts close). If closure occurs when variable supply reaches around 7 volts, the it is a 6v unit and about 14v for a 12v unit.

Hello, I ran my 35 on 6 volt about 5 years, 8 volt for about 20, and 12volt for about 7 and used the same regulator and generator. I just adjusted the regulator for about 2 volts over what the battery was, 6-8, 8-10, 12-14 volts.
I clean the points in my delco reg. when it gets lazy or erratic charge. I sand the points in it with real fine sand paper. then drag match book paper through them to clean them. works like it"s brand new again. -ed

Try opening it up -remove the cover as there should be markings inside to identify it.
