Spark Plugs for TEA-20

I have gone through this forum and other ones looking for the
“correct” spark plug to use. That of course does not exist because of personal preferences
and bias. That is what I am looking for, your preferences and bias when it comes to plugs
whether they are in the following list or not.

So here is the list of plugs that supposedly fit my TEA-20, currently I have NGK BR5HS.
My manual suggest AC or Champion but show no numbers.

NGK = BR5HS, B4ES, BH6S & B6HS.

Autolite = 386, 388 & 3116.

Champion = D18Y, D21, D23 & L-90C

This might be a double post, I could not find the first one !

I have ran both the Autolite 3116 and the Champion D18Y and either performs as good as the other in my experience, but I run top quality points,wires,coil,etc...I believe that makes more difference than the brand of spark plug you use. I would not use the NGK because they are a resistor spark plug and non resistor plugs will perform better. Same with the Autolite 386 and 388. They are resistor plugs also. The AC Delco number is C88 but I do not know for sure if they are resistor or not.

My TEA20 is running Champion D18Y gapped around 50 thousands of an inch.

I really don't get too excited about spark plugs.

They last much longer with electronic ignition. No idea why....maybe because they have a hotter spark and far less carbon build up.

Well I ordered the Autolite 3116 and when I got them they are not the right thread size.

The 3116 diameter is Waaaaay to big to fit in the TEA-20 head.

What's up with that ?

Ooops. Looks like my error......... :oops:

[b:67b331689f]Autolite 3116:[/b:67b331689f]
Product Type: Non Resistor
Description: Loose Terminal Nut
Heat Range Chart Location: C22
Hex: 7/8"
Reach: 1/2"
Resistor/Non-Resistor/Suppressor: Non Resistor
Seat: Gasket
Thread Diameter: 18MM
Tip: Power

Autolite recommend [b:67b331689f]Autolite 425[/b:67b331689f] for the TEA20:
Product Type: Resistor
Description: Copper Core, Loose Terminal Nut
Heat Range Chart Location: B12
Hex: 13/16"
Reach: 1/2"
Resistor/Non-Resistor/Suppressor: Suppressor
Seat: Gasket
Thread Diameter: 14MM
Tip: Standard

The 3116 you have suits a TO30. Same reach - larger thread, larger hex, different heat range.

I'll check my TEA20 again this morning. Champion recommends L10 plugs and I tried to read it without taking a plug out and assumed L18.........

Sorry about that......... :oops:

That's OK I found a good Autolite chart that showed what plugs
fit the TEA-20, the 425 and a platinum one AP425.

Re-ordered the 425's and just about to install them now.

Thanks Bob, no harm done.
