coil getin hot

the coil on my tractor is getting so hot I can't touch it and the sparks seem to be blackish, I just put on a new 6 volt regulator that came with the tractor when I got it, and i'm running a 12 volt battery, where i'm I going wrong could it be how it is wired or do I need a 6 volt battery and if so would that even turn the engine over. I also believe the generator is not working how do I test for that if someone know more bout this than I please help

It is all wrong! A 'black' spark? That's like saying the candle's flame is black! ??? All 4 components must match in voltage, battery, voltage regulator, generator & coil.

You need to find out what is 6 volt and what is 12 volt then decide which way you want to go. Of course the 6 volt will turn it over that is the way it left the factory if it is a TO 20, TO 30, or a early 1955 TO 35. The TE 20, and TEA 20 up to serial number 200000 left the factory as 6 volts. Is it possible the person you bought it from gave you the old 6 volt regulator and he had already changed it to 12 volts?

i'm using soild 14 ga wire to run everything is that heavy enough wire or is that part of why it is getting hot?

also what bout the blackish color on the spark plug does that mean its running a lil rich on fuel?

If your running 12 volts to a 6 volt coil it will get hot and burn up shortly. Either install a ballast resistor inline to the coil or get a true 12 volt coil.

That time you said the spark plugs are blackish and the original post says the sparks are blackish. To me yes that sounds as it is rich with fuel. Why don't you let us know which model of tractor you are working on? Sometimes that could make a difference.

52 T030 I believe it is 6 volt pos ground with generator, I put a 12 volt batt to it and coil got so hot I could not touch it, I worried that I may have ruined the coil, but could have I burned something else up also? I ran it for several min tonight and it slowly started to shout down as I guess the coil got hot and quick making spark? I need help

ok so far your advise has been very helpful Jason thank you. so if I get a true 12 volt coil will my points work the same? also near as I can tell I'm running on a 6 volt positive ground system so what your saying is I can use a 12 volt batt and upgrade the coil and the rest will be fine and the generator will work on that as well? I need help in this area of the tractor

If you"re using a 12V battery with a 6V coil no wonder it"s getting hot! You"ve doubled the current through the primary circuit. Either put a resistor in the primary circuit, get a 12 V coil (~ 3.2ohms resistance). Check your points; they probably are burned.

6v generator will never charge a 12v battery. A 6v ignition will burn up with 12v gong in w/o the correct resistors. We/you need more info. The 12v alternator and coil need resistance to get it correct for a 6v coil. With the correct coil you don't need the resistor. You'll need to rewire to accommodate the change. Maybe someone will get you a diagram or look it up. Which way do you want to go?

what about the 6v volt regulator behind the engine that mounts below the batt do I need to change that or is it the regulator for the 12 volt batt

I sit possible to use a 12 volt batt and coil while keeping the 6 volt regulator (black square box with four terminals) without changing the 6 volt generator

No.

12v battery will require a 12v generator and regulator OR a 12v alternator and regulator. As has been mentioned, a 6v generator/regulator cannot charge a 12v battery. You will also need to change out the lights to 12v equivalents if your tractor has lights.

You have two options, return the battery to 6V or make the decision to change to 12V and replace generator, coil, lights and regulator. Your starter is not as important. A 6V starter will operate on a 12V system without any issue however you MUST not engage it for long! A 6V starter on a 12V system will burn out quickly if engaged for too long. If you machine doesn't start quickly then let the starter cool before trying again.

14 gauge should be fine. That's what mine has. Clean weatherproof connections are important.

Comment on the black spark plugs, I wouldn't worry about them until you've sorted your other issues out. Chances are what is happening is that your spark is getting weak (from the voltage issue) then finally dying and by this time your plugs look a mess.

Once you have a 12V coil your points should be fine as long as they are not burnt out already. It is the combination of 12V battery and 6V coil that is brutal to the points!
