lift wont work on a 35

Was there a loud pop or bang when it quit? If there was it could be the relief valve stuck shut and caused the lift cylinder to break. That seems to have happened quite a bit here lately. It could also be the relief valve is stuck open and not allowing any pressure to build. Best thing to do is drain some of the hydraulic oil out and remove the right side inspection plate "dipstick cover" and look for fluid leaking or squirting while it"s running. Tell us what you find and we will go from there

There are lots of things which could be causing it not to work. If you could give us some idea of events leading up to it not working it would surely help.

i dont know anything. i just bought the tractor and it was broken when i got it.

Thought that might be it. In that case, proceed as Jason has said. How long had the tractor been sitting when you got it? My 202 had 3pt when new but because it also had a backhoe, I don't think it was ever used. The lift arms were seized in place, the hyd. pump had gotten water in it and froze/split and all the controls were stuck solid from not being used. Taking the inspection cover off and operating it is a good place to start.....that's assuming it even has any oil in it. Just keep your fingers out of there when the tractor is running!

took cover off and can see oil moving. when i pick arms up by hand i hear something rattling

When you pick up the arms by hand do they fall right back down? On the top cover, on the right side, just in front of the seat there is a rectangular cover. That cover has a pipe which goes down and seats into the hydraulic pump and transfers the fluid from the pump, up to the hydraulic cylinder to lift the arms. If you were to remove the cover (just two bolts) and pry it out, there are o-rings both on the end that seats into the pump and one where it bolts to the lift cover. Those could be gone.......it's unlikely to be that simple but you never know. Also with that pipe removed you can have a look inside (with the inspection cover removed) while you raise the lift lever and see if any fluid shoots out of the pump. You may need a mirror and flashlight to do this.
Later models will have a filter on the hydraulic pump, I'm not sure if you can get to it without removing the lift cover. If it's plugged up you won't get much movement........not sure if that would cause it to not lift at all but it's a possibility.
Failing all the simple things, you will have to remove the lift cover. Remove all the bolts around the perimeter of the lift cover and get someone to help you with lifting it off, it's heavy! Or if you have a hoist of some sort. It can be done with one person but it's not the wisest thing to do. Be careful when lifting it so as not to damage the control arms which extend downward and engage with the pump.

Well that would tend to make it not work.
And the rattle you hear when moving the arms would be the lift ram falling away from the piston.
So you removed the rectangular cover and there is no pipe attached?
This cover?

i asked who i got it from if he knew what was wrong . he said probably the pump . he didnt say it didnt have one. i took the top off and it doesnt have a pump.

Wow, that's pretty dirty of them not to tell you and then be vague about the problem......depending on the circumstances you bought it under. You can buy them from this site for around $400. Depending on what you paid for the tractor I'd say that could have been a deal breaker unless you bought it as is for a good price. Are you going to ask if he has the pump?

when he said probably the pump i thought it mite be something simple. i have a parts tractor with a pump in it. how much trouble to take out?

Once the cover is off, which it sounds like you've done, it's very easy. Remove the drive shaft, one cotter pin and it will slide together and come out. You'll have to drain the fluid down below the two mounting pins and remove the pins, one from each side down near where your feet go. Slide the PTO shaft rearward after removing the locking ring from around the shaft at the back of the tractor. Then you should be able to lift the pump right out.

What I'm pointing to in the first picture is one of the pins which holds the pump in place. Take off the two nuts and it just slides out. There is one on either side.

On the left hand side you can see where the pin comes through from the outside.


Here is the drive shaft. If you remove the pin then the collar will slide forward and allow you to remove the shaft.

how to get the bottom shaft out and to get it so clean? thanks

If by bottom shaft you mean the PTO shaft, you go to the rear of the tractor, remove the bolts that hold on the ring around the PTO shaft. It's hard to get a good grip on to pull but essentially you pull straight back on the PTO shaft once the ring is off. As far as getting it so clean, that's just how it came out. If it's had oil in it and been run all it's life then it should be pretty clean. If not I'd suggest a wire brush or wire wheel.
