1953 TO30 with a broken starter gear. Looked at ring gear and something is out of line. Starter gear has been striking the ring gear about 3/32" too close to crank. The marks are uniform and there is enough play of the gear on the shaft that it can ride up into the groove - that is, until it breaks off a tooth. The starter shaft doesn"t have any play. I don"t think the drive gear can be made any thinner so the only way I can see to align things is to grind 3/32 from the outward side of the hole the starter fits in or from the starter nose cone. The nose cone is about two years old and might be machined off center - how can I tell? I"m ordering a new gear and I would like to know how to prevent this in the future - thoughts?
