12V coil on 6V tractor?

My TO30 coil died and it appears to be a 12V coil (primary resistance 3.8 ohms but I can"t find a 12V stamp anywhere). I thought it ran OK so I am surprised. I"ve ordered a new coil (6V) and am hoping she will start a little easier. Any thoughts?

do you have a 6volt batt. than the 6v coil is what you need the resistence is about 1.5 if i remember right.

I should have added on the 6 volt coil + side goes to the distributor if not you'll get premature failure on points. just a thought but your compression may be low but easier to start when warm?

The high resistance (3.8V) is consistent with 12V coils - I was expecting something between 1.5 and 2. Compression is good so I"m hoping she will start in a couple of turns with the new coil instead of the four or five she took before. The battery is at the end of its life (runs about 6.1 to 6.2V) so I will get a new one this week also.

With positive ground + on coil goes to distributor, with negative ground - on coil goes to distributor.

Reversing should not affect points life but will reduce spark efficiency. Symptom I've seen with this several times with reversed coil wiring is harder starting when engine is cold. (Cold as in having set overnight, not necessarily winter time)
