F40 quit now won't turn over

Was brush cutting the other day and after I finished while I was pulling out of the field I snubbed the tractor. When I tried to restart it would not turn over. After engaging the starter several times it turned over and started but then quit again as if I popped the clutch and snubbed it even though I did not. I checked the starter and it was fine then tried to start it again. Each time I engage the starter it will turn the crane a 1/4-1/2 inch. after several tries it seemed to go back to normal turned over and started but quit in a couple of seconds. It's almost like it is under extreme compression and can not turn over with the starter. Any ideas that might get me going in the right direction?

Hello, You may have blown a head gasket, and coolant is getting in the cylinders , Pull the plugs out and see if it will spin over. If it throws coolant out the plug holes that will answer the question. If it does not spin better then look elsewhere.-ed
 
Pulled the plugs and tried to turn the engine over and it reacted the same as before. Starter will turn the engine 1/2"-1" each try and after many tries it cranks over almost as normal but then hit what seems like a tight spot and stops. The radiator is full and clean no oil. The cylinders are dry no coolant. What next.

Loosen the distributor shaft and have someone keep turning the starter. If it twisted out of time it could act that way.
If you had all the plugs out- did you try turning it over? Unfortunately, if it is still bound up in the same position with no compression to fight you, it may have spun a bearing. Let's try the timing trick first...
 
Checked the distributor and the timing has not moved. If I try the starter enough it seems to hit a spot that it will turn over and it starts but snubs out after only a couple of seconds.
